Second Helpings

Second Helpings Second Helpings is a nonprofit food rescue & distribution network, striving to eliminate hunger in the SC Lowcountry. Hunger has a local address.

Each year, we collect and distribute some 3 million lbs of food. We are a funded UWLC (United Way of the Lowcountry) partner agency. One in seven people, and one in five children in South Carolina, struggle with hunger. Our 300 volunteers supply 50 nonprofit food pantries, soup kitchens, agencies and churches in Beaufort, Hampton and Jasper counties. Together, we provide more than 2.3 million meals per year to feed our local hungry.

A heartfelt thank you to the Eleanor A. and Bernard H. Breedlove Foundation for supporting Second Helpings’ Healthy Food Initiative and helping nourish our community.

This year, we are proud to celebrate 10 years of the Healthy Food Initiative, which has helped provide more than 1.8 million pounds of healthy produce, protein, and pantry staples to local families, seniors, and neighbors facing hunger across the Lowcountry.

Because of generous supporters like the Breedlove Foundation, Second Helpings can continue ensuring families have access to nutritious meals year-round. We are grateful for your partnership and commitment to helping build a healthier community.

Changes to SNAP could mean more Lowcountry families turning to local food pantries for help.

Second Helpings Executive Director Amy Colin recently shared how these changes could impact our region and why local food assistance organizations are preparing for increased need.

Our partner agencies already serve more than 14,000 people each week.

Thank you to WJCL 22 for helping bring attention to this important issue.

This is the kind of rescue we love to see. 🌽🍅🥬

Fresh fruits and vegetables can be some of the hardest foods for local pantries to keep in stock, and some of the most important.

Through food rescue and our Healthy Food Initiative, Second Helpings works to make more fresh, nutritious food available to our agency partners throughout the Lowcountry.

Sometimes that means rescuing a truckload of produce. Other times, it means purchasing healthy food from local farmers and partners when donations aren't enough. Either way, the goal is the same: more nutritious food for our neighbors.

Looking for a hands-on way to give back right here in the Lowcountry?

Second Helpings volunteers ride our trucks, rescue food from local donors, and deliver it directly to food pantries serving our neighbors.

You don’t need special experience, just a little time and a willingness to help.
Whether you volunteer regularly or jump in when your schedule allows, a few hours can make a real difference.

Ever wonder what happens after food is rescued?

🥕 Food is donated by grocery stores, farms, restaurants and other local partners.
🚚 Second Helpings volunteers pick it up.
📦 Our trucks deliver it directly to local food pantries and agencies.
❤️ From there, it reaches neighbors throughout the Lowcountry, many times is on the dinner table the same day.

Last year alone, more than 500 volunteers helped make this process happen week after week, nearly every day of the year.

It is a simple idea with a big impact: rescue food that would otherwise go to waste and get it to people who can use it.

For more than a decade, Saint Andrew By-The-Sea UMC's Soup Kitchen has offered hot meals, groceries, kindness, and a welcoming place for neighbors in need.

Each Tuesday and Friday, guests can enjoy a fresh meal and visit the Harvest Table for perishable and nonperishable groceries provided in part through Second Helpings and Deep Well. On busy days, the kitchen serves as many as 80 guests, including children.

What makes this ministry special is the care behind every meal—sharing stories, offering encouragement, and creating a sense of family. We are proud to partner with St. Andrew By-The-Sea and support the volunteers who make this work possible each week.

What an incredible way to turn creativity into compassion. 👏🎨

Young artist Reed Davis Dimaria recently showcased 12 original works as part of his Titanic Exhibit at the Island Recreation Center, sharing both his artwork and his knowledge of this historic event. Even more impressive, Reed chose to use his exhibit to support Second Helpings, with artwork available in exchange for donations to help fight hunger in our community.

Thank you, Reed, for sharing your talent and choosing to make a difference through your art. And thank you to CH2 Magazine for supporting Reed and Second Helpings and helping share his story.

Way to go, Reed!

We were honored to be invited to Reed Davis Dimaria’s Titanic Exhibit at the Island Recreation Center this evening.

The artwork was incredibly detailed, along with his storytelling of this historic event as he guided us through his 12 masterpieces.

Well done Reed! We were able to secure one of the artist’s originals, with a donation to his featured charity, Second Helpings.
