Second Helpings

Second Helpings Second Helpings is a nonprofit food rescue & distribution network, striving to eliminate hunger in the SC Lowcountry. Hunger has a local address.

Each year, we collect and distribute some 3 million lbs of food. We are a funded UWLC (United Way of the Lowcountry) partner agency. One in seven people, and one in five children in South Carolina, struggle with hunger. Our 300 volunteers supply 50 nonprofit food pantries, soup kitchens, agencies and churches in Beaufort, Hampton and Jasper counties. Together, we provide more than 2.3 million meals per year to feed our local hungry.

Every ticket helps make a difference across our community, supporting sea turtle protection, healthcare access, food rescue, hunger relief, and local history preservation.

Thank you to Calhoun Station for supporting Second Helpings and our food rescue efforts through a recent grant.

Second Helpings is proud to be a recipient of support from Bluffton’s oldest thrift store, which uses proceeds from sales to give back to local nonprofits. What makes Calhoun Station especially unique is that the store is 100% volunteer-run, a true example of neighbors helping neighbors.

Community partners like Calhoun Station help make it possible for Second Helpings to continue rescuing surplus food and strengthening hunger relief efforts across Beaufort, Jasper, and Hampton counties.

Be sure to stop by. The store is open Wednesdays and Saturdays from 10 am to 1 pm at 77 Pritchard Street in Bluffton.

A heartfelt thank you to PEARLS of Hampton County for their generous donation in support of Second Helpings’ Healthy Food Initiative.

Because of community partners like PEARLS of Hampton County, we can continue helping supplement rescued food with healthy produce, protein, and pantry staples for local families facing hunger.

For the last 10 years, the Healthy Food Initiative has helped provide more than 1.8 million pounds of nutritious food to neighbors across the Lowcountry, helping ensure families have access to healthier meal options.

Unopened, nonperishable food items can make a real difference for local families facing hunger right here in the Lowcountry. Simply drop your extra unopened, nonperishable groceries in a Second Helpings Tourist Food Rescue Bin located throughout Hilton Head Island and surrounding communities.

Yesterday marked the first day of Groceries-To-Go, a new summer food program helping local children and families access healthy meals while school is out.

Already this week, 1,721 children signed up to receive FREE weekly grab-and-go breakfast and lunch meal kits through a partnership between Beaufort County School District, The Nutrition Group at Beaufort County School District, St. Gregory the Great Catholic Church, and Second Helpings.

Second Helpings is proud to support the program by recruiting volunteers, providing trucks for distribution, and supplying snacks to help ensure local children have access to nutritious food all summer long.

A heartfelt thank you to First Presbyterian Church Hilton Head Island, SC for their generous support of Second Helpings.

As fuel costs continue to rise, donations like this help ensure our fleet of trucks can stay on the road rescuing and delivering food to local food pantries, soup kitchens, shelters, and family programs across the Lowcountry.

Every day, Second Helpings rescues surplus food and delivers it the very same day to neighbors facing hunger. We are grateful for partners like First Presbyterian Church who help make this work possible.

What happens when a local farm has extra fresh produce during harvest?

Through Second Helpings’ Healthy Food Initiative, it becomes an opportunity to nourish neighbors and support local farmers at the same time.

Davey Dempsey shares how a partnership between Dempsey Farms and Second Helpings helps connect fresh, local produce with families facing hunger. Second Helpings rescues surplus fruits and vegetables from the farm and delivers them to local food pantries the very same day, meaning food can go from the field to someone’s table in just hours.

Through grant funding, Second Helpings is also able to purchase some produce directly from local farmers, helping support agriculture while increasing access to fresh, nutritious food for families in need.

Please join us in welcoming our 2026 Summer Interns to Second Helpings!
This summer, we're excited to have Tyler Cole, Omar Marreez, and Kohle Greene working alongside our staff, volunteers, agency partners, and food donors throughout the Lowcountry.

Tyler is a Human Services student at USC Beaufort with a passion for helping individuals and strengthening communities through service and support. Kohle is pursuing a degree in Public Health at USC Beaufort and will be helping us evaluate and strengthen agency partnerships and service delivery. Omar, a Supply Chain Management student at Western Kentucky University, will be focused on analyzing our food distribution and logistics processes while learning firsthand how food moves from donors to neighbors in need.

Throughout the summer, all three interns will participate in food rescue routes, community events, agency visits, and special projects designed to immerse them in our mission of reducing food waste and fighting food insecurity.

We're grateful to have their energy, talents, and fresh perspectives on our team. Welcome to Second Helpings!
