Second Helpings Second Helpings is a nonprofit food rescue & distribution network, striving to eliminate hunger in the SC Lowcountry. Hunger has a local address.

Each year, we collect and distribute some 3 million lbs of food. We are a funded UWLC (United Way of the Lowcountry) partner agency. One in seven people, and one in five children in South Carolina, struggle with hunger. Our 300 volunteers supply 50 nonprofit food pantries, soup kitchens, agencies and churches in Beaufort, Hampton and Jasper counties. Together, we provide more than 2.3 million meals per year to feed our local hungry.

Celebrating the people behind the mission.

At our Hilton Head Volunteer Appreciation event, we had the opportunity to recognize several incredible volunteers whose time, energy, and commitment make Second Helpings stronger every day.

🚚 Bob Rooney, Truck Volunteer of the Year, is a regular Tuesday driver who is always willing to step in when another crew needs a hand. From food rescue routes to fresh food distributions, Bob continues to show up wherever he is needed.

🧡 Phil Zitello, Non-Truck Volunteer of the Year, joined Second Helpings in 2025 and quickly became someone we could count on, both on the trucks and at our Healthy Food Initiative and Fresh Xpress distributions.

👏 David and Linda Sonato, New Volunteers of Excellence, have become a driving force behind our Tourist Food Rescue program, reliably taking the van out each Monday to rescue food left behind by visitors and get it to neighbors who can use it.

Every award represents so much more than one day of recognition. It represents early mornings, miles driven, food lifted and loaded, and countless moments of simply saying, “I can help.”

Play Pickleball. Fight Hunger. Make the Holidays Brighter! 🦃

A little friendly competition can make a BIG difference for our Lowcountry neighbors!

The Lowcountry Pickleball Tournament is returning November 7–8 at Burton Wells Pickleball Complex, with all proceeds benefiting Second Helpings and helping provide holiday meals to families facing food insecurity.

But we need your help to make it happen! Registration closes October 16, and enough players must sign up for the tournament to move forward. Every registration brings us closer to putting holiday meals on our neighbors’ tables!

🏓 Saturday, November 7: Men’s Doubles
🏓 Sunday, November 8: Women’s Doubles
🏓 Age divisions: 50–64 and 65+

🚚 Meet the Thursday A Team.

Harry Siletti, Harry Vosganian, and Greg Whitaker recently rescued and delivered more than 3,000 pounds of food in a single day.

That means thousands of pounds of good food collected from local donors, loaded onto the truck, and delivered to pantry and agency partners across our community instead of going to waste.

It is a lot of teamwork, and these three make it happen with a great attitude. Thank you, Harry, Harry, and Greg, for showing up week after week and putting in the work behind every pound rescued. 🧡

Meet Jeanne.

Jeanne Yarmey volunteers on a Second Helpings food rescue truck, and for her, there is something pretty incredible about watching the full circle happen in just one shift.
“We start with an empty truck, load 2,000 to 5,000 pounds of food from local stores, deliver it to soup kitchens, help centers, Boys & Girls Clubs and churches, and return with an empty truck.”

Food that might otherwise have gone to waste instead reaches neighbors who can use it. Along the way, Jeanne sees the smiles, gratitude and hope that come with every delivery.

And after all those miles and pounds of food?

“I am proud to wear the Second Helpings uniform. I always wanted to be a trucker.” 🚚🧡

Jeanne is one of the hundreds of volunteers who have made 60 million pounds of food distributed since 1992 possible.

This milestone belongs to all of them.

Their Apple Crisp cocktail is the featured drink of the month, and a portion of each one sold will support Second Helpings and the work we do throughout the Lowcountry.

We’re so grateful to the Greater Bluffton Chamber of Commerce for helping us celebrate Truck #17! 🚚❤️

This new truck means more capacity to rescue and distribute food throughout Beaufort, Jasper and Hampton Counties and more opportunities to get nutritious food to neighbors who need it.

Truck #17 was made possible by an incredible community of donors, volunteers, partners and supporters who believe in the power of working together.

Thank you to everyone who joined us for the ribbon cutting and continues to support our mission. We’re excited to put Truck #17 to work across the Lowcountry!

This Food Waste Prevention Week, we are celebrating some of our favorite Food Heroes in the Neighborhood, our volunteers. 💙

Every week, they help rescue surplus food, load trucks, sort donations and get good food to neighbors across Beaufort, Jasper and Hampton counties.

Their time and energy help keep food out of landfills and put it where it belongs, on tables in our community.

This week, we kicked off our annual agency conference series in Bluffton, meeting with local partners who are part of Second Helpings’ broader network of 57 agencies across the Lowcountry.

We shared the latest information on food insecurity, talked about how Second Helpings is responding, and discussed how we can work together as a stronger safety net for working families, seniors, and others facing food insecurity.

The strength of this work comes from collaboration. Every agency brings its own experience and understanding of the communities it serves.

Thank you to Bluffton Self Help, Palmetto Breeze / LRTA, St. Gregory the Great Catholic Church - St. Andrew's Kitchen, The Church of the Cross Bluffton God's Goods Thrift Store Bluffton, Boys & Girls Clubs of the Lowcountry, and St Luke Baptist Church LBC for joining us, sharing ideas, and continuing to work alongside us to make sure more of our neighbors have access to the food they need.
