Eleven United Methodists embarked on a Civil Rights Pilgrimage across Michigan, learning the histories of marginalized communities and uncovering stories of resilience along the way, and we were honored to be one of their stops!📍They came to learn about the refugee and immigrant women and teens shaping our West Michigan community through belonging and empowerment.❣️

Hope has a way of showing up in unexpected places. 💚

Sometimes it's in a cup of Sudanese Milk Chai. Sometimes it's in a room full of people telling their stories out loud.

This week, we invite you to join us at Treetops on Wednesday, May 27th from 12–1pm for Ink & Impact. A time to gather, reflect, and put words into action through advocacy letters that stand in solidarity with immigrant and refugee women and girls in our community.

In the café, we're featuring treats from Rahseeda, including her Zainab's Fingers.🍵

And if you're looking for something to take home, our Rooted Together Shop has the "You Belong Here" tee waiting for you. Designed and inspired by the stories of immigrant and refugee women and teen girls right here in Grand Rapids. Proceeds directly support our community development work with them. Shop here: https://bit.ly/4f7oIvK

Sharing Pillar 1 of our 3-year Strategic Plan- "A Place Where Belonging Takes Root" 🌱

Tarah recently shared the beginning of our strategic plan for this next season and the conviction that belonging doesn't happen by accident. Today, Luba Goncharenko, our Senior Collective Care Manager, is sharing the first of our four strategic priorities: We are a place where belonging takes root.

For ten years, Treetops has worked to be a place where refugee and immigrant women, teen girls, and their families are known and invited into leadership.

As we step into our next chapter—Belonging Takes All of Us—our first strategic priority is a commitment to tend this foundation more intentionally than ever. This year that looks like refining our programs and creating formal ways for the women who've walked this path to help shape what comes next. These new mermaids are handcrafted from locally sourced fabrics from the markets of Moldova. Behind every doll is one woman who made her entirely by hand, putting 3 to 4 hours of dignified, skilled work into every detail. A beautiful gift with a story worth telling. A license might feel ordinary to some. For immigrant and refugee women in West Michigan, it means access to jobs, healthcare, independence, and freedom.

Help us share this story! Host a private screening of our new documentary short, Driving Independence: A License, a Dream, a Newfound Freedom — we'll come to you with the film, chai & treats, and a real conversation. It's one of the most meaningful ways to get the word out and support a program that truly matters. We're 70% of the way toward our $60,000 fundraising goal to sustain Driver's Training into 2026, and every screening helps us share the message.
