We are so excited to welcome Gabriella Buonavolonta to the Willow Bend team as our Fall 2026 intern! Gabriela has already been an incredible help, particularly at our Community Celebration, where she absolutely rocked as our resident face-painter!

A bit more about Gabriella, in her own words:

"My name is Gabriella, and I’m the Fall 2026 intern for Willow Bend Environmental Education Center. I’m currently a senior studying Studio Art with an emphasis in New Media.

My biggest dream is to collaborate with the National Park Service or an AZA‑accredited zoo to create immersive experiences that help visitors step into the sensory worlds of the animals and ecosystems we cherish. I love discovering interesting facts about plants and animals, and I’ve recently developed a strong interest in creating bioplastics as part of my artistic practice.

I’m excited to be part of Willow Bend and look forward to strengthening my ability to create didactic, environmentally focused artwork. I’m also eager to shadow this wonderful team and learn the inner workings of a nonprofit."

Classroom programs are in full swing at Willow Bend Environmental Education Center!

We just wrapped up our elementary waste reduction module with Flagstaff Junior Academy, working with three classes: K-1, 1-2, and 2-3.

This is a two-part series. We start with a lesson on recycling and waste reduction, followed by a student favorite: bringing in our red wigglers and learning about worm composting!

This program is grant funded thanks to the City of Flagstaff Sustainability Office and the Azulita Project. We also offer a waste reduction series for grades 4 and up, where students take a deeper dive into the topic.

There are lots of fun ways to build on the learning, too. Thanks to the Azulita Project, classrooms can check out our tabletop Lomi home composter to use with students. We can also help your class set up its own worm bin, though the classroom would need to provide some materials, or we can book a field trip to our local landfill.

We would love to bring this program to your school! We especially like to book these programs during the winter months when outdoor field trips are harder to schedule. Email us today and get your program on the schedule!

It's almost time for Science Saturday again! On September 5th, we will explore the wide, wonderful world of wildlife. With the help of our friends at the City of Flagstaff PROSE department, Northern Arizona Audubon Society, Diablo Trust, and more, we'll have a fun morning of hands-on demonstrations, crafts, and activities for all ages. Add to the fun by dressing up as your favorite animal!

Willow Bend staff had such a wonderful morning at the Arizona Community Foundation Grant Award Celebration!

We got to catch up with Willow Bend’s past Executive Director, Moran Henn (darn, we should have gotten a picture!), and celebrated alongside so many wonderful nonprofit partners and philanthropists in our community.

A big thank you to the Arizona Community Foundation and GeoFund for supporting our project, “Expanding Access to Environmental Education for Flagstaff Students.”

This funding will help Willow Bend bring more hands-on, place-based environmental education directly to Flagstaff schools, with priority access for Title I schools. Students will have opportunities to explore local ecosystems, wildlife, water, geology, renewable energy, and environmental stewardship through programs in classrooms, schoolyards, and nearby outdoor spaces.

Calling all artists, creators and scientists: submit a proposal for our upcoming Ponderosa Pine Arts Festival! 🌲

The Ponderosa Pine Arts Festival invites participants to engage with the ponderosa pine in a new way, exploring its cultural significance, ecological importance, and artistic potential through hands-on workshops and/or guided experiences.

Willow Bend Environmental Education Center is seeking artists, creators, scientists, educators, naturalists, and local experts to propose engaging 2-3 hour workshops for adults. We are interested in creative and meaningful ways to explore the ponderosa pine through art, making, science, ecology, culture, history, writing, and/or our relationship to place. We are looking for engaging experiences that invite participants to see the familiar ponderosa pine in a new way.

Selected artists will receive an artist stipend, and we also have a budget for workshop materials. Willow Bend prefers to purchase materials directly whenever possible.

Thank you to everyone who came to our Community Celebration on Saturday!

We surpassed our $2,500 fundraising goal and had more than 140 people join us to celebrate Willow Bend. We had such a great time, and we’re feeling energized heading into a busy school year of field trips and classroom programs!

A huge thank you to our amazing Board of Directors for helping organize the event, our intern Gabriella for face painting for more than two hours straight, and The H***y Dories for providing the great tunes.

And most of all, thank you to everyone in our community who came out to celebrate with us. We’re so grateful for your support of Willow Bend and environmental education!
