We know, we've taken a lot of surveys over the years, but they've all helped get us to here.

The Safe Streets Master Plan (SSMP) is coalescing various guiding documents, existing and in process, like Flagstaff's Active Transportation Master Plan, the Flagstaff Regional Plan, Coconino County's roads and trail planning, and current ordinances with public input to craft design codes to ensure future development provides safe transportation options for everyone.

Please take the time to work through this survey, and be specific as you can!

Ultimately government actions should reflect the will of the citizens, so here's a chance to be part of a better future for our communities!

Phase I of the Elden Base trails project was finished today with four new trails totaling 4.5 miles in length. Sunnyside and Andes trails allow for better neighborhood access, and Camino trail traverses the terrain above the pipeline and enables an important east-west connection to the greater trail network. Forces of Nature is routed above Camino and weaves through steeper terrain composed of dacite boulders, natural benches, and drainages.

The trails were largely being built by the U.S. Forest Service - Coconino National Forest Flagstaff Ranger District (FRD) trail crew and American Conservation Experience. Flagstaff Biking Organization pitched in with two volunteer events. A while ago we received a couple emails regarding encounters between people riding bikes and people driving fast on Schultz Pass road.

People made some comments and suggestions there. To address a few of them...

⏱ Speed limit signs:

This would legally require an enforcement plan and a traffic study in order to install the signs. These are more complicated than they may sound, expensive and, realistically, resources don't exist to pursue this approach.

❌ Close the road to motor vehicles:

This road is used by many other users, hunters, OHV riders, leaf peepers, hikers driving to access higher elevation trails, cyclists driving to access Waterline Road and higher elevation trails, and more. Although limiting the road to only non-motorized users may sound appealing to some, the reality is that this would meet with substantial public backlash from many people. Also, a permanent closure would require expensive analysis and a decision that would be time consuming and expensive, and would be subject to the above mentioned public input from all users.

We did what we could, and hopefully it will help mitigate some of the issues.

The folks at the U.S. Forest Service - Coconino National Forest Flagstaff Ranger District agreed to put up some signs, but they'd have to purchase them.

We called our friends at Coconino County engineering and asked if they had some signs that the Forest Service could use. They graciously donated four of the signs in the attached image, which we picked up and brought to the Flagstaff Ranger District who installed them in some strategic locations along the west side of Schultz Pass Road.

As we asked previously, please drive, ride, run and hike safely along Schultz Pass Road. It is a narrow dirt road which begs slower speed and a bit of cooperation from all users for everyone to get along safely.

⚠️ Please see the most up-to-date trail closure map on the Lowell Observatory Property. For your safety, please be sure to stay out of the active logging operation’s site. It is very dangerous to go anywhere near logging equipment that is operating.

With fall colors upon us we wanted to give folks a heads up:

Lockett Meadow Road is closed through November 30th to ALL USES, including biking and hiking.

It is still possible to access Lockett Meadow from Waterline Road using the Inner Basin trail and some other much more adventurous routes, (the old FR553 road is pretty challenging with a bike…😳). Lockett Meadow Road in Lockett Meadow proper remains open.

Thanks to the 70 folks who came out today to help maintain the Fort Valley Trail System at this year's Pedals v Pistons v Horseshoes v Hiking Boots Trail Day! This annual celebration of shared-use trails is now in its 20th year! For the 2nd year in a row, pedals took the trophy following several years of Piston dominance. Hiking/running shoes/boots made a good showing with Horseshoes also representing.

Thanks to the U.S. Forest Service - Coconino National Forest Flagstaff Ranger District trail crew for hosting, the Flagstaff Trail Faeries and Flagline Trails for helping lead crews, and huge props to the Coconino Trail Riders, Northern Arizona Trail Runners Association, Flagstaff Trails Initiative, and Coconino Horsemen's Alliance for their partnership in this tradition. Morning coffee was provided by KickStand and refreshments donated by Nackard Pepsi.
