We send our deepest condolences to President Peterson Zah’s family. Dr. Zah was the last chairman and first president elected to the Navajo Nation. He was a passionate leader who advocated for
education and sovereignty. His contributions to the Navajo Nation and the three Arizona universities cannot be understated. He served as an advisor to the president at Arizona State University. With the appointed representatives from Northern Arizona University and The University of Arizona, they organized the
Arizona Tri-Universities for Indian Education (ATUIE), the first of its kind in the country. ATUIE still meets when the Arizona Board of Regents meets, and NAU was fortunate to have Dr. Zah present at the meeting in May, where he shared, “We need more of you; working at the university is not easy... You’re doing it for the children; You’re doing it for your tribe.” We mourn the loss of a great leader but know that he produced many leaders through his caring guidance and advocacy.
