Arizona Department of Transportation leads the way with Flagstaff, installing what we think is the world's first amber LED lighting on an interstate highway system. This photo shows a crew replacing the very tall "high mast" lighting at the I40/I17 interchange (these fixtures are lowered to the ground for servicing). Kudos to the ADOT team!

A great night of stargazing in Coconino Estates at Jim Cullen Memorial Park! Demonstrating dark skies in the heart of Flagstaff, a city of nearly eighty thousand residents!

For any savvy about dark sky measurements, we measured a zenith sky brightness of SQM 20.4, which corresponds to about Bortle Class 4.5. Less than 3/4 of a mile from City Hall.

🎉 2026 isn’t just another New Year. It’s the year of Flagstaff's Silver Jubilee—25 years since Flagstaff became the world’s first International Dark Sky City.

FDSC has ambitious plans for celebrating Flagstaff's Silver Jubilee in 2026 and for putting Flagstaff's success on the global stage.

Would you make a year-end gift to FDSC before you head out to welcome the New Year? Your gift—of any size—will help us continue to protect our star-filled skies here in northern Arizona and share this model with the rest of the world.
