Hunger Free Colorado

Hunger Free Colorado Hunger Free Colorado is Colorado's leading nonprofit dedicated to ensuring no Coloradan goes hungry. Parents go without to feed their children.

Hunger Free Colorado, a statewide nonprofit organization launched in 2009, connects families and individuals to food resources and fuels change in systems, policies and social views, so no Coloradan goes hungry. Everyone is at their best when they have enough to eat, but there are many life storms that make it difficult for Coloradans to afford healthy food. Having enough food supports the foundat

ion for optimal health and well-being throughout our lifecycle. Nutritious food helps babies' brains and bodies develop, gives kids the energy to excel in and out of school, reduces the risk of chronic diseases in adults, and keeps seniors stable and independent. Yet, in tens of thousands of homes across the state, our neighbors strive for a brighter future but struggle to make ends meet, whether due to a minimum-wage job, health issue, job loss or another misfortune. Too many kids start the school day hungry, unable to focus on learning. And, after a lifetime of working, Colorado seniors are left to fend for themselves and face the question: Do I buy needed medication or food? Hunger is a serious—and often invisible—problem in Colorado, but it is solvable. Federal nutrition programs, along with state and local counterparts, play an important role in connecting people of all ages, backgrounds and zip codes to needed food. By working together and supporting people throughout their lives, we can ensure everyone reaches their potential, which benefits all of us.

The 2026 legislative session has ended—but its impact on food access will last far beyond the Capitol.

Even in a tough budget year, advocates and community members protected key programs like Healthy School Meals for All and fought to keep SNAP strong.
But our work isn’t over. Harmful decisions—like weakening farmworker overtime protections—show how much more must be done.

As we look ahead, Colorado needs long-term solutions that invest in people and communities. That’s why we’re supporting a Graduated Income Tax ballot measure—lowering taxes for 97% of Coloradans while asking the wealthiest to pay a little more.

👉 We only have a few months to gather enough signatures to get this on the ballot! Get involved today at www.protectcoloradosfuture.com.

After listening to the voices of SNAP recipients who opposed restrictions to SNAP, the state of Colorado has indefinitely delayed their vote on these proposed changes and these restrictions are NOT in effect in Colorado.

We want to highlight one of those community voices, Martha Espinosa, a child-care provider in Greeley who submitted this opinion piece featured in the Greeley Tribune, “SNAP Restrictions punish communities that deserve support.”

Martha understands and shares many of the concerns brought forth but believes there’s a better way to support, rather than punish, communities to achieve healthier outcomes for all through empowerment and choice.

________

It is more critical than ever that we let our Members of Congress know how policies passed in D.C. impact our communities at home. This week we met with the offices of Representatives DeGette, Hurd, Crank, Pettersen, Crow & Evans and Senator Bennet, sharing real stories from SNAP & WIC recipients and how they can champion changes at the Congressional level to protect access to food resources for Coloradans.

We’re very proud of the work we’ve been able to accomplish in Colorado and there’s still so much we can do to ensure that every single Colorado family has what they need to put food on the table.

Thank you to the Colorado Joint Budget Committee for Keeping SNAP Strong!

The state budget this year was exceptionally challenging and we’re grateful to the members of the Joint Budget Committee for their decision to Keep SNAP Strong.

SNAP is one of the best tools we have to reduce hunger, but Federal cuts and cost-shifts are putting food assistance, including SNAP, at risk.

Our work doesn't stop here. Sign up for action alerts and updates at bit.ly/hfc_advocate
