Hear from Dr. Ash Pachauri, Director of the Protect Our Planet (POP) Movement, as he explores the importance of youth leadership in addressing climate change and the strategies that can turn awareness into action.

A globally recognized behavioral scientist, author, and sustainable development strategist, Dr. Pachauri brings more than 20 years of experience advancing climate action, youth leadership, and public health around the world.

MuSE: A Community Museum will be open during Sultana Downrigging Festival!

Stop by and explore two exhibits:
- Adaptation & Persistence: Indigenous Cultural Landscapes on the Eastern Shore
- Enacting Freedom: Decision-Making, Consumer Desire & African American Community on Maryland’s Eastern Shore

Together, these exhibits explore themes of foodways, community, and agency through archaeological artifacts, maps, photographs, and historical publications, sharing stories of Indigenous and African American communities on Maryland’s Eastern Shore.

Join us next Tuesday for our second CES Seminar of the semester, “Supporting Community Health through Culturally Tailored Farm Subscriptions,” featuring Stella Yi, MPH, PhD, Associate Professor at NYU Grossman School of Medicine!

Dr. Yi’s research focuses on reducing chronic disease and improving public health, with a particular interest in cardiometabolic health, nutrition, and physical activity in Asian American communities.

Open Archaeology Lab Returns to SG Hall!

Washington College students, faculty, staff, and community members are invited to explore our region’s history through archaeology. The lab also serves as a home base for research projects that help piece together the stories of the people and places that came before us.

Join members of the Anthropology Department every Friday from 10am to 1pm at Semans-Griswold Environmental Hall (SG Hall). No experience is necessary! Just bring your curiosity and a willingness to help process artifacts.

🌊 Fall semester is back, and so is Chesapeake Semester 🌊

This fall, 12 students are diving into an immersive, four-course experience exploring the rich history, ecology, and culture of the Chesapeake Bay. Through hands-on fieldwork, in-depth study, and outdoor adventures, they’ll experience the watershed in a whole new way.

Orientation week was packed with team-building and hands-on learning, from the Alpine Tower with Echo Hill Outdoor School and ropes course to Critters of the Chesapeake with Sultana Education Foundation, a Chester River paddle, and submerged aquatic vegetation (SAV) training with Maryland Department of Natural Resources!

Stay tuned for Ches Sem Chatter as we follow the cohort’s adventures and discoveries throughout the semester!

A big thank you to Jeannie Haddaway-Riccio, Principal at R&R Solutions and former Secretary of the Maryland Department of Natural Resources (2019–2023), and Ben Grumbles, Executive Director of the Environmental Council of the States, for taking the time to speak with CES students and staff last month!

We enjoyed a great conversation about their career journeys, environmental policy, leadership, and the future of environmental work. Thank you both for sharing your insights and experiences with our community!

💧Your voice matters in the Langford Creek watershed💧

The Langford Watershed Alliance (LWA) is a partnership of local organizations and community members working together to improve water quality, ecological health, and quality of life throughout the Langford Creek watershed.

The LWA wants to hear from you about the issues affecting your community, including stormwater flooding, shoreline erosion, failing septic systems, and elevated bacteria levels in our waterways.

Join us for a Langford Watershed Alliance Town Hall on Monday, October 19, from 5:30–7:30 p.m. at St. Paul’s Episcopal Church.

This is an opportunity to:
Share your experiences and concerns
Learn about available resources
Connect with local organizations and neighbors
Explore solutions to challenges facing the watershed

Where could a CES Student Award take you?

For Gabby Bonds ’27, CES Student Award helped make her trip to Ecuador possible as part of the Environmental Studies in Ecuador summer short-term study abroad course.

Beyond the unforgettable experiences, Gabby says her time in Ecuador encouraged her to think more critically about her environmental impact and helped expand her worldview through learning from cultures and communities outside her own.

💡 Now, it’s your turn to turn your ideas into action!

CES is offering Student Awards of up to $500 to support experiential learning opportunities that explore human-environment interactions and develop solutions to environmental challenges.
