The Common Table: Community, Companionship and Gathering

The concept of the “common table” originates from ancient, agrarian, and hunter-gatherer roots, where sharing food fostered social bonds, safety, and community, breaking bread together away from distractions.

Historically, hosting a meal with a shared table was a display of generosity and prosperity. Cultural differences exist at the Common Table in different countries, such as the utensils used, whether you sit at the table or on the floor, whether dining is expected to be a quiet affair or noisy and bustling.

How will you use your creativity to capture the concept of “breaking bread” and the social benefits of a common table? Is there a common table without food? What about the concept of species other than humans sharing a common table; birds on a bird feeder; bees on a blossoming tree; kittens sharing a cat food bowl?

We can’t wait to see your creations.

To honor Juneteenth and the upcoming 250th anniversary of the United States, RiverArts is inviting members to submit work for our mini pop exhibition, What Does Freedom Look Like? We are looking for artwork that reflects your own interpretation of freedom, whether that’s through history, family, community, patriotism, identity, protest, joy, resilience, or everyday life. Freedom can mean something different to everyone. We welcome a wide range of ideas, perspectives, and artistic styles that encourage conversation and reflection on what freedom has meant, and still means, in America today.

The exhibition will open June 19, 2026 at the Chestertown Visitor’s Center and will also feature a dynamic public art installation, The Wall of Un-Freedom, where community members can share thoughts on oppression, barriers, and the changes they hope to see in 2026 before joining together to symbolically knock the wall down at 5:00 p.m. Opening night will also include music by Sombarkin and community drummers.
