Our mission is to provide a safety net for eligible families whose financial circumstances limit their ability to eat nutritionally on a regular basis. Eligibility is primarily determined by Kent County Department of Social Services. Individuals may also bring a referral from a responsible community member such as a counselor, doctor, minister, business leader, and volunteer. The Kent County Food
Pantry is located in Chestertown Maryland and has been an independent 501(3)C nonprofit organization since 2001. We partner with the Maryland Food Bank, United Way of Kent County, the Chester Valley Ministers’ Association (CVMA), Washington College Caring For Kids, and the Kids Backpack Program. The area Backpack Programs provide weekend meals to Kent County school children who live with food insecurity. Volunteers pack and deliver the bags of non-perishable food to Kent County elementary schools and the middle school weekly during the school year. Students take the food home in their backpacks. In 2016, 136,000 pounds of food were distributed to 480 different families, about 68 pounds of food per family (1,376 individuals). The Kent County Food Pantry depends on wide-ranging community support to better serve hungry people.
