Sandbox Initiative

Sandbox Initiative Outreach in the form of collaborations with surrounding art museums and institutions is also an important component of this new program.

The Washington College Program for Creativity and the Environment, will explore our aesthetic relation to the natural world, both historically and as it is developing today, and will examine the social and ecological issues at its core. The program draws students and faculty from the Departments of Art and Art History, Music, Drama,
Literature, the Humanities, and the Natural Sciences, and welcome

s participation from other academic departments. Each fall the program will welcome a Distinguished Visitor who will collaborate with a member of the Washington College faculty. The end result will be a unique piece of work that incorporates and addresses environmental concerns unique to Chestertown or the Chester river region.

"The artwork is being dedicated in honor of artist and arts advocate Alex Castro, who broadened Chestertown’s artistic and cultural horizons during his time here as a resident and Washington College faculty member. At the college, Castro lectured in Art and was for several years the director of the Kohl Gallery. Castro was the driving force behind the Sandbox, a creative arts program of Washington College."

The Town of Chestertown and the Chestertown Arts & Entertainment District invite the public to the Saturday, October 14 dedication of the David Hess sculpture Broad Reach, which is being installed in Wilmer Park as the first artwork commissioned under Chestertown’s Public Arts Master Plan. GREAT FUNDING NEWS FOR BROAD REACH SCULPTURE!!

An anonymous donor has stepped forward with matching funds of up to $20,000 towards the remaining $40,000 needed to construct and install the Broad Reach children’s sculpture at Wilmer Park.

This means that every dollar donated between now and April 30 will be matched dollar for dollar, up to $20,000!

You can donate any amount, either through the Broad Reach GoFundMe page at https://www.gofundme.com/CtownSculpture or by check earmarked “Broad Reach Donation” to the Town of Chestertown, 118 N. Cross Street, Chestertown, MD 21620. Charitable contributions to the Town of Chestertown are tax-deductible under section 170(c)(1) of the Internal Revenue Code.

Chestertown’s support for the arts hearkens back to 1898, when private funds were raised by the dedicated women of the Ladies Improvement Society to beautify Fountain Park. Central to that effort was the purchase of a fountain by Robert Wood & Co., a Philadelphia based foundry. Inspired by a sculpture by Antonio Canova, the fountain features the goddess H**e, cupbearer of the gods, and has served as a welcoming ambassador to citizens and visitors for nearly twelve decades.

Similarly, Broad Reach will serve as a metaphor for our community’s maritime roots and its flourishing arts scene. It is also the inaugural work initiated by the Chestertown Public Arts Master Plan, funded in part by the National Endowment for the Arts Our Town Program.

Broad Reach was designed to provide a welcoming space for young families and visitors to Wilmer Park, and it will serve as a beacon for Chestertown’s vibrant downtown and Arts and Entertainment District.

Stay tuned for details about the unveiling and dedication plans, which are tentatively scheduled for May 2017.

Exposure to the arts can have a great deal of impact on how we undertake scientific research. A valuable lesson many still need to understand and embrace.

"My writing teacher was a writer, a composer, a film producer. She was a true artist in every sense. And I’m sure you noticed the connection between the art of writing and the art of doing science, right? Science, including the type of satellite remote sensing at which NASA excels, is based on making detailed observations and allowing those observations to tell their story. NASA spacecraft give us images of glaciers, volcanoes, forests, large cities and sea ice, among other stories of a changing planet. And it’s up to us to see the details in those stories. When the images—the stories—have enough detail, we can interpret them and make meaning out of them."

Due to the loss of our downtown space we will be hosting Nicole Capobianco's series of Eco-Costumes from the recent Washington College production of "Macbeth" outside of Kohl Gallery this First Friday. Cole was the recipient of one of our student/faculty collaborative grants, and traveled to England and Scotland over the summer to research greener methods of costume production.
