This shouldn't be surprising to anyone who has been paying attention. Sadly, with everything going on, we seen people pushing back on the work that's needed, but it's needed now more than ever.

We've been silent online these days, not because there's nothing going on. This year has been extremely busy and we are incredibly short staffed and with a bare bones team, frankly, we haven't had the capacity to share much online.

However, to get a little insight into what's going on, this piece is about a retreat our very own Jake attended and where some of our ground organizing energy has been going. Bringing white men into anti racism work.

We will have a newsletter going out next week, with updates on what we've been up to as well as the future of CCI.

This past spring, I witnessed a growing nationwide ecosystem of interwoven efforts organizing white men to join movements for the well-being of all.

Today marks the 9th anniversary of our beloved founder, Horace Seldon's passing.

I didn't get the chance to know Horace as well as many others in the CCI community but our conversations continue to keep me in this work.

Attached is a copy of Horace's writings, timeless and much needed. -Shay

Introducing the 2026 Maine Black Excellence Award Honorees!

We are proud to announce this year’s honorees for the Maine Black Excellence Awards, presented by The Third Place.

These awards celebrate Black leaders, entrepreneurs, educators, community builders and allies who are shaping Maine’s future. From creating cultural infrastructure to driving sector innovation, each honoree represents the brilliance, resilience, and impact of Maine’s Black communities.

The Maine Black Excellence Awards were created to acknowledge the depth of talent and leadership that often goes unrecognized. In a state where visibility matters, this celebration honors those doing the hard, necessary, and visionary work of building equity, connection, and opportunity.

Join us in uplifting these changemakers and recognizing their contributions to Maine’s social, cultural, and economic landscape.

In many ways, having today's reading moved to the African Meeting House actually fit with the mood of this year's reading of Douglass.

Thank you to all who came out today. If you are on our mailing list, we will have a recap of today in the next newsletter. Pictured, our executive director and two long time community members who have been involved with the Douglass reading for years.

Due to the weather, there's a change of venue for the location. See below.
