Today is Indigenous Peoples' Day. Today, we not only honor and celebrate the culture, community, and legacies of the indigenous and native people--including but not limited to Wampanoag, Wampanoag Tribe of Gay Head (Aquinnah), Mashpee Wampanoag, Massachusett, and Nipmuc Peoples--past and present In Massachusetts. We call to action our communities to raise awareness and commit to understanding that there is no survivor justice until there are no more MMIWR2S (Missing and Murdered Indigenous Women, Relatives, and 2 Spirit).

October is Domestic Violence Awareness Month, and whether we’ve talked about it or not, we all know someone who’s experienced or is experiencing domestic violence. Here are some ways to start the conversation and support a survivor as they share their experiences—AND find local programs in MA.

REMINDER: as we share content related to domestic and intimate partner violence this month, it is always ok to take breaks or disengage from this content as you need. We want to share resources that are accessible and support our collective capacities to respond to violence, and know that content can oftentimes be activating for survivors.

Today, our rage and our hearts are with survivors of sexual violence--the brave Jane Doe who came forward in the Cornell case--and all survivors who have experienced SA on a college campus, no matter the amount of time since the assault. Sexual assault is not just a headline. As survivors, our stories cannot be reduced to the violence we have experienced. Throughout Title IX investigations, their dismissals, public speculation about perpetrators, and sensationalized coverage of r**e [culture], survivors are the ones to carry the weight and experience retraumatization for the rest of our lives.

For all survivors and the communities that care about preventing sexual violence, we wanted to re share "On Our Own Terms," a zine we made in 2023 on some incredible writing and storytelling that explores surviving sexual assault BY survivors--especially BIPOC, Trans, Indigenous, and Black survivors whose stories are often not reported to the same degree and do not receive the same mainstream attention.

Last week, our executive director Hema Sarang-Sieminski had the honor of delivering the keynote speech at our member program Transition House's "50 Years of Radical Resilience: Domestic Violence Symposium." We were so grateful to hear from leaders in our movement in a panel moderated by Shameka Gregory, Executive Director of the Cambridge Gender-Based Violence Prevention Initiative.

“The compassionate and strategic persistence of this collective reminds us why it is so important to lean into the call to move together—and to resist isolation. We have some superpowers as a movement. We know how to get resources to those who need them, despite red tape. We have the skills to interrupt violence. And we know how to tell the stories of how our work saves lives, restores dignity, and transforms the health and well-being of our communities," - Hema Sarang-Sieminski, JDI's Executive Director.

In our coalition, we know that sexual violence not only costs survivors' safety and autonomy, but has lasting devasting financial impacts. Yesterday, our Massachusetts Representative Congresswoman Ayanna Pressley (MA-07)'s introduced "The Survivors' Rights Restitution Act" to establish financial relief for survivors of sexual violence. Thank you Representative Pressley for standing with survivors, and highlighting the work of the movement to end sexual violence here in Massachusetts, including our member organization Boston Area R**e Crisis Center: BARCC !

September is su***de prevention awareness month, and as AI-generated content continues to grow online, JDI remains committed to advocating for survivor safety across all environments, including the digital landscape. Sharing or taking sexual images without consent, whether through real images or AI-generated content, is sexual assault. It causes lasting harm to survivors and perpetuates a culture of exploitation that stands in direct opposition to the safety our Coalition strives to build.

Technology cannot not be utilized to violate boundaries or bypass the protections afforded to survivors. We must ensure that our efforts to end sexual and domestic violence adapt to these technological challenges and respond seriously to the dangers of image-based sexual assault.

Our solidarity and grief are with Haitian communities across Massachusetts today, in the wake of the loss of Pierre Damas Bel. September is su***de prevention awareness month, and in our coalition we know that safety & dignity for our immigrant communities IS su***de prevention. Here in Massachusetts, Haitian survivors and advocates are integral to our community and movement working to end domestic and sexual violence. For generations, Haitian immigrants have shaped our history and communities and we stand with Haitian communities and all immigrants.
