NIEA is proud to honor Akwesasne Freedom School with the 2026 William J. Demmert Cultural Freedom Award!

Founded 47 years ago by Kanienkehaka families in the Akwesasne Mohawk Nation, the school grew from a shared commitment to ensuring that children would continue to speak their language and carry their culture forward.

Its founders understood that education was central to sovereignty and self-determination. By choosing to operate without federal or state government funding, they protected the freedom to teach through their own language, curriculum, and community priorities.

Today, Akwesasne Freedom School continues to provide an immersion environment where language, culture, and identity are at the heart of learning. Guided by the principles of Peace, Power, and Good Mind, the school supports children in understanding their roles and responsibilities within their community.

This award celebrates the vision of its founders and the commitment of the families, educators, and students who continue that work. Their efforts demonstrate the power of Native communities to define education on their own terms.

🎉BNGA is happy to introduce and congratulate one of our 2026 AISES scholarship recipients!

🪶Juliana Guerrero-Gobert is an enrolled member of the Blackfeet Nation (Amskapii Piikanii). After graduating from Blackfeet Community College, her Tribal college, Juliana transferred to Montana State University, where she will graduate this year with an undergraduate degree in biological engineering.

🎓Following graduation, Juliana plans to continue her education in graduate school and is set to work at the National Institutes of Health in Bethesda, Maryland. Looking ahead, she is committed to returning home and using her education and experience to serve her community as an environmental health scientist.

👏Congratulations, Juliana! We are proud to support the next generation of Native students pursuing their education and bringing their knowledge back to their communities.

🙂 We’re also excited that Juliana will represent BNGA at the National AISES Conference, October 15–17, 2026, in Portland, Oregon!
