In honor of , we're celebrating girls like Helen from . đź’›

Before joining the Luminos program, Helen was nervous about attending school. After stepping into her joyful classroom, she quickly began to thrive—connecting with classmates, gaining confidence, and building the reading, writing, and math skills she needs to pursue her dreams.

"When I grow up, I'd like to be a pilot," says Helen. "To be a pilot, it requires getting a good education."

Getting girls into school is only part of the challenge. What they learn once they're there matters just as much. At Luminos, girls and boys experience similarly significant learning gains in classrooms designed to challenge gender norms, promote girls' leadership and voice, and ensure every child feels safe and supported.

The first step toward inclusion is within reach of every school system, even where resources are scarce. It starts with designing lessons and materials so every child is seen, taught well, and supported to learn from the start.

In a new blog post ahead of , Luminos’ Rastee Chaudhry and Manuella Ankrah explore what that looks like in practice.

At Luminos, inclusion is built into every design decision. Lessons draw on local texts, traditional games, and familiar places, grounding learning in children’s own cultures and communities. Our materials ensure every child— including those with disabilities—feels represented, and our phonics-based approach is structured so all of them can build foundational skills from day one.

On , we're celebrating the teachers at the heart of our work. 👩‍🏫💛

In Luminos classrooms across Africa, teachers do far more than deliver lessons. They create the conditions for children to feel safe, confident, and capable in the classroom—many for the very first time.

Behind every great teacher is a system that supports them. Our Teacher's Guides, training, and coaching are designed to give teachers practical, structured support in their daily work.

Thank you to every teacher who brings our joyful classrooms to life, and to teachers everywhere who make learning possible!

đź“©Our quarterly newsletter is here, and this edition is packed with exciting updates! Here's what's inside:

- We launched Luminos' open-access library of structured pedagogy materials during UNGA week—developed and refined over a decade with teachers and government partners, and free to download and adapt.

-New results from government classrooms in Ethiopia show what these materials can achieve at scale. In Sidama, our program grew fivefold as government supervisors took on teacher coaching, without losing impact.

-During UNGA week, Luminos joined leading philanthropies to mobilize $50 million in pledges to support the Global Partnership for Education, helping unlock financing for government-led foundational learning in Ethiopia, Liberia, and beyond.

đź’ˇPlus: key insights and blogs from the Luminos team, and a new video on our government partnership story in Ethiopia!

Last week, we hosted our tenth annual luncheon during the UN General Assembly (UNGA) week—and it was a milestone moment.

We launched our open-access library of structured pedagogy materials and shared new results from Ethiopia showing what effective, evidence-based materials can achieve at scale.

We were joined by leading voices in education, including Dr. Benjamin Piper of the Gates Foundation and Dr. Joan Oviawe of FLIGHT, to explore how to strengthen foundational learning across sub-Saharan Africa.
