Silver Lining Mentoring

Silver Lining Mentoring Since 2001, Silver Lining Mentoring has empowered foster and adopted youth in Greater Boston to flourish through committed mentoring relationships.

Silver Lining Mentoring empowers youth in foster care to thrive through committed mentoring relationships and the development of essential life skills. Silver Lining Mentoring is one of only a few mentoring organizations in the country that exclusively serves this population, and provides the most targeted, specialized mentoring service for young people who

have been removed from their homes due to alleged abuse or neglect. Youth in the child welfare system constitute one of the more under-served populations in our community; because of this, these youth can benefit significantly from committed mentorships and increased access to employment training, education, and other critical job- and life-skills resources.

It is easy to feel like our schedules are too full to volunteer.

But when you look at the numbers, making a difference takes far less time than you might think.

According to the Bureau of Labor Statistics, the average adult has about 153 hours of leisure time every month. At Silver Lining Mentoring, our e-Mentoring program asks for just 4 hours a month.

That is less than 3% of your free time.

In those 4 hours, a young person leaving foster care gains a consistent, reliable adult in their corner to help navigate school, career paths, and everyday life skills. You keep the rest of your time, while dedicating a few meaningful hours to help a young person feel seen, supported, and valued.

"Young people tell us they are not seeking charity or special treatment. They are asking for relationships alongside resources."

Kamilah Bunn recently published a powerful reflection on her own transition out of the foster care system, highlighting how a single mentor helped her imagine a future beyond survival.

At Silver Lining Mentoring, we know that providing resources is not enough; young people need a steady, caring adult to help them navigate life's big transitions.

As August comes to a close, this is your last chance to enroll in FosterClub's Educational Stability course for free.

Frequent school moves are one of the biggest challenges for youth in foster care, and this course offers incredible insights into federal protections, the effects of school mobility, and lived-experience perspectives.

If you are a mentor, educator, or advocate looking to better support young people as they head back to the classroom, do not miss this opportunity.

"I have realized I cannot fix everything, but by just being there I can make a difference."

Meet Betsy, a retired Human Resources Executive who has been volunteering with Silver Lining Mentoring for two years. Betsy supports her mentee with essential life skills, from navigating everyday challenges to building confidence for the future.

In our latest blog, Betsy shares what inspired her to get involved, how active listening has transformed her mentoring journey, and why consistent adult relationships matter so much for youth in foster care.

As a new school year approaches, feeling prepared and confident makes all the difference for our young people.

Last week, our team attended Hope & Comfort’s Start Strong distribution event in Needham.

Thanks to their incredible generosity, our office is now stocked with essential hygiene supplies ready for our youth as they head back to school.

When community organizations collaborate, our shared impact goes further.

A huge thank you to the team at Hope & Comfort for their ongoing partnership and dedication to supporting youth across Massachusetts.

No specialized background required. Just you.

Mentoring is not about having all the answers—it is about being there.

When you show up consistently, you help build a foundation of stability and trust that empowers a young person to thrive.

We provide all the training, resources, and individualized guidance you need from day one. All you bring is an open heart and 8 hours a month.

Hands-on learning is such a powerful way for mentors and mentees to connect, explore, and try new things together.

A big thank you to our partners at Foster Love for connecting us with Accenture, who generously donated 15 KiwiCo STEM boxes for our young people.

Each kit includes an interactive science project, lab gear, and learning materials that our matches can dive into side by side.

We are so grateful for community partners who invest in creative, enriching opportunities for youth in foster care.

Our matches had a wonderful time exploring Unity Farm Sanctuary in Sherborn, MA!

We had 8 mentees and 5 mentors join us for a fun morning outdoors.

Shared experiences like this give mentors and mentees the opportunity to connect outside their regular routines, discover new interests, and build stronger relationships. From meeting rescue animals to learning about their care, it was a memorable day of connection and community.

A huge thank you to the team at Unity Farm Sanctuary for welcoming our group and hosting such an enriching visit for our young people.
