Mentorship has long been part of how Indigenous communities care for one another, sharing knowledge, traditions, and guidance across generations through stories, relationships, and everyday experiences.

On Indigenous Peoples’ Day, we honor the histories, cultures, and contributions of Indigenous peoples and recognize the importance of preserving and uplifting the relationships and traditions that strengthen communities and support young people.

Imagine going through a difficult time and feeling like you have no one to turn to. No one to talk to about what's weighing on you. No one who notices when something isn't quite right.

For too many young people, that feeling of isolation is a reality.

Along with mental health professionals, mentors are an important part of a young person's support system. A trusted adult who listens without judgment, checks in, and consistently shows up can help young people feel seen, valued, and less alone.

World Mental Health Day is a chance to reflect on the role supportive relationships play in young people's mental health and well-being, and how we can help ensure every young person has someone they can turn to and count on.

A lot can happen over the course of a season. So can a mentoring relationship.

Practices, games, bus rides, wins, losses, and everyday conversations give coaches countless opportunities to build trust and connection with young people.

That’s why we partnered with the U.S. Soccer Foundation to create Coach-Mentor Training, a free training that helps youth sports coaches strengthen the mentoring skills they bring to those moments.

There’s always more to learn about what helps mentoring relationships thrive. But keeping up with every new study, finding, and development across the field? That can be a lot.

That’s why we created the Mentoring Research Roundup. Each quarter, we bring together new research, conversations with researchers and practitioners, and insights you can put into practice.

In Issue 2, we’re exploring culturally responsive mentoring through the work of Science Club, a STEM mentoring program serving young people in Chicago.
