Artists For Humanity

Artists For Humanity Artists for Humanity (AFH) harnesses the power of art, mentorship and paid professional experiences to inspire teens to build their future.

Artists For Humanity (AFH) was founded in 1991 as a space for young creatives to thrive—a bridge between raw teen talent and the City of Boston. Today, it is a powerhouse of art and design, harnessing the power of mentorship and paid professional experiences to inspire teens to build their future. AFH offers art and design solutions, transforms spaces, and builds social equity. With studios in Bos

ton and NYC, AFH teens sit at the table with industry professionals where their opinions are valued. Working alongside professional mentors, 400+ teens are employed to design, build, animate, code, photograph, film, paint, and create compelling solutions for our clients. By hiring AFH, our partners contribute to economic vitality, thriving communities and diversifying new networks for the next generation. Visit afhboston.org to learn more!

“We listen. We Care. We Observe” - Jason Talbot, AFH Co-founder

Important conversations were being had in our 90s photobooth at Greatest Party 🙂

AFH may have changed a lot over 35 years but our dedication to empowering teens and helping young people find their voice has remained our top priority! We have had the pleasure of watching teens grow up, pursue their career and come back as a mentor, a fellow, or even as the parent of a new AFH teen. Artists for Humanity is generational!

Time marches forward and the teens we see working at AFH today will be the change-makers we see in our community tomorrow. We’ve watched our alumni become community leaders and innovators across a variety of industries since 1991 and we can only imagine what the next 35 years of AFH holds.

“Before I joined AFH, I was very much prioritizing digital work,” Brianna, an AFH NYC Teen explained, “When I started working here, there was only the Painting Studio. Working here has helped me expand the mediums and scope I work with.”

Brianna is from Brooklyn, NY and started working at Artists for Humanity almost 2 years ago, at first working digitally, and later expanding their work to incorporate a wide variety of mediums including digital illustration, poster making, character design, and more! In their free time, they enjoy playing horror video games like Resident Evil and making their own original characters for comics. Although they love a wide variety of artistic mediums, their current goals revolve around animation, and they’ve already successfully taken a big leap in the right direction— they will be attending SCAD for animation next year! But their dream project is to make an animated film.

“I want to make an animated film,” Brianna emphasizes, “Or be part of a big art studio that animates stuff. That’s my major life goal.”

But before they leave AFH and move on to their next adventure, they’re working on a digital collage mural for a private investment firm in Boston offices that represents their values of trustworthiness, experience, and success.

“They want us to make the collage representative of their values of trustworthiness, experience, and success.” Brianna elaborates, “They want us to represent the people who work in the office, and also the establishment as a long-term financial institution, and their journey over the long lifespan of their company.”

We can’t wait to see the finished collage mural, provide Brianna a proper send-off (BTW, you can celebrate with Brianna and AFH NYC via their Open Studio on 5/30), and to see all the amazing animations, posters, and character designs they create in the future! Congratulations Brianna! We’re so excited to cheer you on in your next adventure :’)

Earlier this year, the AAPI Arts and Culture Collaborative, a key initiative of the Asian Community Fund (ACF), had their third annual AAPI Arts & Culture Summit at Artists for Humanity. We’re honored to have been the 2026 event venue for this summit, which is the largest annual statewide convening for AAPI artists, arts administrators, and supporters.

“This was our first year hosting at AFH, and we loved being in a space that was so bright, open, convenient, and rooted in arts & culture,” Jobelle Mesa, Program and Development Manager at the Asian Community Fund expressed, “We believe that coming together in spaces like this increases feelings of belonging, facilitates collaborations, and strengthens our united voice.”

Since the formalization of the AAPI Arts and Culture Collaborative in 2024, the Collaborative has engaged 300+ AAPI arts leaders, creatives, and allies across the state, and mobilized 85 individuals to participate in working groups focused on: asset mapping, narrative change, and advocacy & funding.

This includes Brightside Media, an AAPI-owned and operated photography and videography business that the ACF often collaborates with to document their events. Thanks to Brightside Media, we have so many gorgeous photos of the 2026 Summit!

Happy AAPI Heritage Month! Interested in attending upcoming ACF events? The Asian Community Fund will be gathering at Edgerley Center for Civic Leadership at the Boston Foundation on June 10 in celebration of the 13 grantees of their Building, Becoming, and Belonging Grantee Celebration! It is open to the public, but RSVP is required. The link can be found in our bio!

A little sneak peek into all of the great work our teens have been engaged in!!! Do you recognize some of the figures they’re painting? Let us know in the comments below 👀

In this video, Saint is currently working on a painting of John Wilson, an activist for black artists in Boston, in which John Wilson is painted in monochrome with a more graphic background featuring Adinkra symbols.

Saint explains, “This symbol translates to life change, and he changed a lot of lives for people in Boston.”

In commemoration of the 250th anniversary of the American Revolution, teen artists from Artists for Humanity (AFH) present a series of portraits honoring individuals who have shaped Boston and local Massachusetts communities, from the nation’s founding to the present day. Through paintings, digital prints, and three-dimensional works, these young artists have researched important figures throughout our 250 years of American history, and more specifically local history, bringing attention to both widely recognized figures and those whose stories are lesser known.

Opening Reception: Wednesday, June 10, 6pm–8pm

”I feel like my friends and my family are a very obvious answer, but they motivate me to keep going,” Jaylen, AFH Animation Teen says about where he finds his inspiration, “and I feel like by not continuing what I do, I’d be letting them down. They drive me to stay on it.”

If you’ve been following Artists for Humanity or you regularly attend our events, you may have already seen Jaylen’s animation work!

In Jaylen’s free time he enjoys reading comics, playing video games, and is particularly inspired by Scott Pilgrim, Fooly Cooly, and Science Saru. He says his dream project would be to work on his own short film or make his own comic book.

Honestly, he might as well already be halfway there as he recently finished storyboarding for a music video and is currently working on character designs.

Regarding the work he is producing through AFH, he’s no stranger to collaborating with clients to produce animated videos. In June 2025, he created concept art for the characters in the City of Boston’s Supplier Diversity Certification “Explainer Video” made for the City of Boston’s Supplier Diversity Department. These characters were then made into animatable assets by his teammates.

The City of Boston’s support is fundamental for AFH teens like Jaylen! Without funding and client work, we would not be able to provide mentorship and paid professional experiences to encourage teens to explore their passions, develop problem-solving skills, and create phenomenal work!

Stay tuned, because Jaylen was recently involved in a VERY cool project that we cannot reveal to you yet and you’re going to want to hear about it! Follow us to make sure you get to be one of the first to find out about our most recent escapades and accomplishments!
