St. Stephen's Youth Programs

The mission of St. St. Stephen's Youth Programs serves more than 600 children and teens
who live in lower income neighborhoods in Boston and Chelsea.

Stephen’s Youth Programs is to promote diversity, equity, and inclusion in education, employment and opportunity through long-term relationships with youth and their families and communities. We offer three programs for young people:

Year-round academic support and enrichment at two sites in Boston's South End and Lower Roxbury. Summer programming for elementary and middle
schoolers at four site

s in Dorchester, Mattapan, and Chelsea. Stephen's Place of Opportunity for Teens (S2POT) which provides teens with year-round academic support and enrichment, tutoring and mentoring, college and career guidance and opportunities for quality employment.

Our final week of B-SAFE. 💜☀️🌻

Last week, we wrapped up an amazing summer with our youth!
- YLC spent 3 days at the Barbara C. Harris Camp in New Hampshire. YLCers spent time by the campfire, participating in the field olympics, stargazing, canoeing, swimming, and more! It was a jampacked 3 days, and our youth love to spend time away from the city and in nature.
- John Hancock’s VIBE Employee Resource Group stopped by to hang out and eat lunch with LEARN! We welcomed new volunteers and celebrated with some familiar faces. Thank you for spending time with us!!

To our youth, staff, families, volunteers, and partners: THANK YOU!!! All of our adventures this summer wouldn’t have been possible without all of your love and support! Thank you for making this summer so memorable!

B-SAFE Week 4!! 💜💜

- LEARN spent the day with St. John’s Westwood and St Stephens Episcopal Church on Friday! They went to the aquarium and saw all the colorful fish, playful sea lions, and even had the chance to touch some sharks and sting rays! 🦈🪼🐙🐠
- YLC visited Nova with St. Elizabeth's Church Both of our YLCers and teens had an absolute BLAST jumping on trampolines, taking on the rope course, and challenging each other in dodgeball. 🤾🤾‍♀️💥⭐️
- A big thank you to St. John’s, Church of the Holy Spirit, St. Elizabeth’s, and St. Peter's Episcopal Church, Weston MA for B-LOVE support this week!

Although we are now reaching the last days of B-SAFE, our summer is still heating up! Stay tuned for more updates on B*H and our wonderful Friday celebration of the last day of program!

Such a stellar Week 3! 💫💜

- LEARN took an adventure to Franklin Park Zoo with friends from Trinity Concord! They saw penguins, lemurs, snakes, ostriches, anteaters, gorillas, lions, and more! 🦁🦍🐸🐍🐧
- YLC traveled all the way to New Hampshire with All Saints Brookline! Our YLCers are real thrill seekers and loved the big rollercoasters! 🎢💟🙌🏽
- Other activities from this week included letters of gratitude to the people we’re thankful for, catapult building, lots of dancing and moving, and more!
- Finally, thank you to our wonderful partners for this week! Trinity Concord , Emmanuel Church Boston, All Saints Parish , Mosaic Action , Food Hub, and St Anne’s Lincoln for a great week 3!

We’re more than halfway through B-SAFE now! We have 2 more exciting weeks to go, which includes more fun Fridays and YLC’s trip to New Hampshire for B*H Camp! Stay tuned for more. 👀👀👀

It is with great sadness that we share the news of the passing of our former Executive Director and member of the SSYP community, Chris Sumner. Chris served as Executive Director of St. Stephen’s Youth Programs from September 2023 through December 2024. Chris was a strong catalyst for change both at SSYP and in the larger Boston community, and the legacy of his impact will continue on. Our hearts and prayers go out to his family and community as they navigate this tragic loss.

We hold his family and all those grieving in prayer during this time and lift him up in joy knowing his faith was strong. Our community is one that finds faith in the everyday moments and Chris accompanied and strengthened that work. Thank you Chris.

Services for Chris will be held on Friday, July 24th at Jubilee Christian Church, 1500 Blue Hills Ave, Mattapan.
5:00-6:00 PM - Visitation
6:00-8:00 PM - Celebration of Life Memorial. The family has asked that in lieu of flowers please consider making a donation to Compassionate Care ALS in Chris’ memory

Spend the morning with our YLCers! ☀️☀️

With Mosaic Action , YLCers engaged in collaborative conversations and activities to develop understanding and empathy. They reflected on the people and experiences that shaped them, and also learned about what shaped their peers. We are so proud of our YLCers for having these vulnerable and thoughtful conversations!

Next, they participated in a catapult-building challenge! Working in pairs, YLCers and their teen counselors used teamwork and problem solving to build and test their catapults.

Every day, our YLCers keep developing their leadership and community building skills. We are so excited to see their growth over the summer!

⭐️ Star moments from the second week of B-SAFE! ⭐️

- YLC spent their Fun Friday at WaterWizz with our friends from St. Paul’s Episcopal Church ! They spent their day lounging in the wave pool and taking trips down the water slides! 🛝🌊
- LEARN visited Kimball Farms with St. Andrew's Wellesley ! Bumper boats were definitely the fan favorite!
- LITs spent their Wednesday afternoon at Linden Ponds Erickson Senior Living , building intergenerational relationships with the folks who live there!
- We received another delicious produce delivery from the Food Hub + St. Anne’s, Lincoln! 🍓🥕
- With our friends from Mosaic Action , YLC participated in another leadership and identity building training. Thanks for helping us build the next generation of amazing leaders! 🧩

Thank you to our amazing partners for such a successful second week!!! We had a blast!

Here is what we were up to during the first week of B-SAFE! ☀️☀️☀️

- Participated in fun enrichment activities, including collaging, goal setting, and reflection led by our Academic Team and Leads!
- Spent a day on the South Shore at Sandy Beach with our friends from St. John’s, Hingham and St. Stephens Cohasset ! 🌊 They also treated us to lunch and an afternoon filled with field games! 🫧
- Ate some sweeeeeet treats from the New Entry Sustainable Farming Project and St. Anne's in-the-Fields .🍓❤️

From teens touring colleges, to organizers gathering over 700 signatures to support Multilingual students, and to youth furthering their academic and teamwork skills, we have so much to celebrate.

🎓💜🌟 Congratulations to our SSYP seniors! 🌟💜🎓

This last Thursday, we celebrated our group of 17 AMAZING seniors! It has been a privilege to have these teens as an important part of our SSYP family. This special group has left a lasting impact on our youth, staff, and community. We are so thankful that you chose us to be a part of your journey. Congratulations, and we are so proud of all of you!!!! You are all going to do great things in this world! 💪
