Each Fall, we unite to learn and serve in remembrance of the September 11th terrorist attacks -- a day that broke our hearts and forever changed our nation. In this 25th year of remembrance, stories of extraordinary courage endure -- including the heroism of Welles Remy Crowther, the “Man with the Red Bandana", to whom we dedicate this .
In the days that followed the attacks, testimonials of Welles' bravery from those he saved brought comfort to his devastated family and friends. The survivors described him as "the man with the red bandana", a signature of Welles since his youth and forevermore, a symbol of courage and selfless sacrifice.
At Boston College, his alma mater, Welles is honored as the embodiment of their mission -- "men and women for others". Each Fall, the football team dedicates the Red Bandana Game to Welles' memory, distributing red bandanas as a reminder of one man's extraordinary valor.
Welles' example motivates the unifying service of our Tribute Service team, which leads projects in support of military, veterans, and First Responders in every corner of the state. On September 11th, their efforts will culminate in hometown remembrance ceremonies and on Boston's Kennedy Greenway as we create 1,250 care packages for our troops and veterans in partnership with Home Base.
We unite to affirm we will never forget and to ensure that the legacy of Welles and the 2,976 loved ones lost is one of hope, compassion, and love.
