Last week 3 students from Somerville High School came over to source some bottlecaps and cardboard for an interactive recycling game they were building for a civics class project. We're always happy to help people out with their projects, and we're glad that some more Somerville residents have discovered us over here in this little corner of the city!

Happy International E-Waste Day everyone! Last year's e-waste recycling rate was less than 18% worldwide...let's see if we can do 25% this year (I'm hopeful, especially with all those clean-outs everyone did in early quarantine!)

More than 100 organisations from 50 countries worldwide will take part in the third International E-Waste Day taking place on 14th October.

Grocery stores had stopped taking redeemable bottles and cans as well as plastic bags during the earlier part of the pandemic. Now some have started taking them again, but you should call ahead to check! For example, the Stop and Shop near me accepts redeemables now, but not plastic bags, and they have no idea when they'll start again. But the Whole Foods near me has apparently been taking plastic bags since July!

Confused about which plastics truly are recyclable? Here is an article that explains it clearly.

Let’s talk about plastic… Dear Wicked Smart Recycler, I recently watched a special about plastic recycling and now my head is spinning. I found out that all of the plastic that I’ve been recycling is either ending up in the ocean or going to developing countries where it is being burned or dum...

Now here's a throw back! Check out this old PSA from WBZ that spotlighted Earthworm back in the late 80s. We're still at it, 30+ years later, despite the economy's ups and downs!

Here is a fun PSA from a local news station about Earthworm Recycling's paper recycling services! See if you can spot some famous past "Worms"!

This report was released just yesterday, and unfortunately reveals that most types of plastic are no longer recyclable in curbside collection programs. The only thing you can count on to be recycled is rigid containers (mainly resin codes #1 and #2 with no shrink-wrap label).

Washington, DC – Greenpeace USA released the results of a comprehensive survey of the nation’s 367 material recovery facilities (MRFs) today, revealing that only PET #1 and HDPE #2 plastic bottles and jugs may legitimately be labeled as recyclable by consumer goods companies and retailers. The s...
