Helpful information for survivors of abuse who need to safely open a bank account

Leaving an abusive relationship doesn't erase the financial record it left behind. For many survivors, the first real obstacle to independence isn't finding a job or housing — it's getting a bank to say yes.

Most banks screen new applicants against ChexSystems, a consumer reporting agency that tracks negative banking history. The problem: ChexSystems doesn't know why an account went negative. If an abuser drained a joint account or opened debt in a partner's name, that history often reads as if it belongs entirely to the survivor.
