It’s National Senior Citizens Day, a day to honor the wisdom and achievements of these elders that make our communities – and families – better. Sadly, many of our seniors are experiencing poverty, food-insecurity, and homelessness. Baltimore City’s 2026 Point-in-Time count of “sheltered homeless” individuals reports, among those aged 65+, 146 were in emergency shelters and 33 in transitional shelters, making up 179 overall (11% of the total count). This is only part of the true picture, as it doesn’t include those who were unsheltered. Apart from children, seniors are the most vulnerable population, with circumstances made more difficult by aging-related health issues. Some of these overlooked elders regularly visit Paul’s Place for a healthy meal, clothing, health checks, and help applying for benefits or housing.

Do you know someone seeking housing? The Housing Authority of Baltimore City (HABC) will open waiting lists for some public housing opportunities (Senior, Mixed Population, and Accessible Housing) from August 17th - August 31st. For details on eligibility, visit the HABC website at https://www.habc.org/habc-information/programs-departments/public-housing/ph-waiting-list/ . The Paul’s Place Case Management team will be glad to assist you with an application starting Tuesday, August 18th, during walk-in guest engagement hours from 9:30AM-11:30AM, Tuesdays through Fridays!

Last year, Paul's Place averaged 130-140 meals served each day. Yesterday, that number was 361!!!! Over 350 meals that our guests would have had to go without if not for the support of Paul's Place supporters.

Executive Chef Ann Willis is seen below making additional food for the additional meals needed. This is a not a small undertaking. Chef has a dedicated team of volunteers in her kitchen who made sure no one goes hungry each day.

All the meals are given to guests for free- no questions asked, no paperwork required.

The economy is making it harder and harder each day for our guests to make their way. A free meal each day helps and connects them with our case management team for countless ways to be supported. But, it all starts with you.

What are your kids doing this summer? The youths from St Andrew by the Bay’s summer camp spent time giving back as volunteers at Paul’s Place yesterday! Their enthusiasm made everyone’s day brighter!

“I tell everyone. On a scale of 1 to 10, I give Paul’s Place a 30.” That’s what a guest says about his experience at Paul’s Place! Meeting the vital, basic needs of our community members is more than how many meals we serve, health checks we provide, or housing applications we make. We want guests to feel respected and seen, comfortable with being here and engaging with our staff and volunteers. That’s how we’re able to make a real difference. That’s how you earn a 30!!!
