Every October, Head Start Awareness Month recognizes the children, families, dedicated staff, and communities that have made Head Start an essential part of American life for more than 60 years.
Last month, more than 650 Head Start directors, educators, and parent advocates from across the country gathered on Capitol Hill to highlight the program’s impact and advocate for the resources needed to continue serving children and families.
Today, Head Start serves nearly 700,000 children from families with low incomes, providing much more than early education. Through health and dental screenings, nutritious meals, and family support services, Head Start takes a whole-child, two-generation approach that helps children build a strong foundation for success while supporting parents as they work toward financial independence.
As lawmakers consider funding and potential regulatory changes that could affect these essential services, continued support for Head Start is critical to the children, families, and communities who rely on it.
