In 2024, homelessness in the United States reached its highest recorded level, with 771,480 people counted on a single night in January, an 18% increase in just one year.

Now in 2026, Atlanta homelessness has risen another 6% as housing costs drive more households into crisis. The conditions driving families into homelessness have not changed. Rents keep rising, affordable housing remains out of reach for far too many families, and the safety net that once caught people before they hit bottom is under serious strain.

Among the hardest hit in 2024 were families with children, who saw a 39% increase in a single year. Nearly 150,000 children experienced homelessness on a single night.

Here in Metro Atlanta, the need is real and the work is urgent. Our House provides shelter, early childhood education, free healthcare, employment training, and wraparound support to families who are working to rebuild their lives.

We cannot end homelessness without community. Share this post if you believe every family deserves a safe place to call home.

The first five years of a child’s life shape the next 80, and Our House makes sure every child starts with a strong foundation.

Our House’s Early Childhood Education program serves children from birth through age five, providing high-quality learning experiences tailored to each child's development. Through our federally funded Head Start and Early Head Start programs, Our House also provides developmental screenings, family engagement support, and connections to health and nutrition services.

For children in families experiencing homelessness, this investment matters more than most people realize. Housing instability can disrupt the critical early window when brains develop fastest and learning habits take root. Our goal is simple: To keep children safe and actively invest in their futures while their families stabilize.

June is Men's Health Month, and most men do not get to the doctor unless a woman in their life pushes them. The research confirms it. Women make roughly 80% of household healthcare decisions, and men are nearly three times more likely to seek care when their wife, mom, sister, or partner encourages them to do so.

If you have a man in your life who is overdue for a checkup, or who has been quietly putting off something he should probably get looked at, this is your reminder that you may be the difference between him going in this month or putting it off another year.

Our House Health can help. We provide free medical care, mental health support, and preventive services for men, women, and children across Metro Atlanta who are uninsured with a low income, or those experiencing or at risk of homelessness. No appointment is needed for most services, and there is no cost to anyone we serve.

Have you ever wondered why Our House offers so many programs?

Our House provides a full range of services because families at-risk of or experiencing homelessness rarely face just one challenge. Housing instability is often connected to job loss, health issues, childcare gaps, and more.

Addressing just one issue rarely leads to lasting stability.

Our House provides a comprehensive range of coordinated services designed to help families experiencing homelessness and housing instability move from crisis to lasting stability. Programs offer family shelter, free early childhood education and childcare, free comprehensive healthcare, free job training and workforce development with paid internships, and individualized case management, because stable housing alone is rarely enough to help a family thrive long-term.

By investing in both children and parents at the same time, every family leaves with the tools for lasting self-sufficiency and wellbeing. To learn more about Our House or its programs, visit https://ourhousega.org/programs/

On Memorial Day, we honor the men and women who gave everything in service to this country. Part of that legacy is the promise that no family should be left without a foundation to stand on. At Our House, that promise drives everything we do. Families in our programs are building something from the ground up, with the hope that what they create will last for generations. This Memorial Day, we remember those who made the ultimate sacrifice and recommit to the work of building a community where every family has a place to call home. https://ourhousega.org/

Amber was a public health professional helping connect vulnerable families to resources across Atlanta. Then domestic violence turned her own life upside down.

While working full-time, Amber was secretly navigating abuse, hiding bruises, missing work out of fear, and trying to protect her young daughter while pretending everything was okay.

What makes her story so powerful is that almost nobody around her knew the tremendous burdens she was carrying. “On the outside, I looked like I had it together,” she says. “But homelessness doesn’t have a look.”

Today, Amber is living independently, raising her daughter in a stable home, finishing her college degree, and rebuilding a life rooted in peace instead of survival.

Read her powerful story and learn:
• Why so many women hesitate to seek help
• The dangerous assumptions people make about homelessness
• What she wants people to understand about homelessness
• Why she says “home” means something completely different to her now
• And the Christmas moment with her daughter that made her realize just how far they’d come
