“Homelessness doesn’t have a look,” Amber said. “Somebody can walk into a room looking completely put together and still be going through the worst period of their life.”

Amber was speaking from experience. She was educated, employed in public health, raising her daughter and helping other families find resources. But behind that outward stability, she was living with domestic violence, hiding bruises and moving between temporary places.

She didn’t think she belonged in a shelter, until one day when a staff member at Our House noticed something was wrong and asked, “Are you okay?” Amber broke down.

Her story reminds us to look beyond appearances, ask the question and listen without judgment when the answer is difficult.

As summer ends and workplace, school and community calendars begin filling up, consider making service part of your fall plans.

Our House welcomes individuals, companies, congregations and community groups interested in supporting Atlanta families.

Groups can prepare and serve meals, organize collection drives, assist with special events or help sort and manage donated items. A volunteer experience can meet an immediate need while giving participants a clearer understanding of family homelessness and the work required to help families regain stability.

For several weeks, Atlanta welcomed visitors from around the world.

The matches are over, and the cameras have moved on, but families across the city are still navigating the cost of housing, gaps in healthcare, uncertain employment and the daily work of creating stability for their children.

Before the World Cup began, Our House CEO Tyese Lawyer asked Atlanta to invest in its people with the same determination it brought to preparing its streets, venues and public spaces.

That work continues through programs helping families access housing, healthcare, early childhood education, employment training and individualized support.

More than 44,000 Georgia public school students experienced homelessness during the 2023-2024 school year.

Some were living in shelters or cars. Others were staying in hotels or with relatives or friends because their families had nowhere else to go.

They still had classes to attend, assignments to complete, friendships to maintain and futures they were trying to imagine. Older children and teenagers may also help care for younger siblings while quietly wondering where their family will sleep and whether they will be able to remain together.

At Our House, mothers, fathers and children of all ages are welcomed together in private family rooms.

On International Youth Day, we recognize the strength of young people navigating housing instability and the responsibility our community shares to protect their safety, education and sense of possibility.

“I’m just glad that he can look up to me now and be happy and proud of who we are.”

A year before Katy said those words, she and her son, Peyton, were living at Our House. Their mornings began at 5 a.m. By 6:13 a.m., they were on the bus so she could take him to pre-K and make it to work by 8. Evenings brought dinner, chores and bedtime. Weekends went to saving money, searching for an apartment and planning what came next.

One year later, Katy had earned a promotion with a $20,000 salary increase, purchased a car, enrolled in college and prepared to move into a two-bedroom home. She was also two years sober.

The life Katy built grew from the work she put in every day and from having a safe place, accessible healthcare and people who understood what she was working toward.

Our House is mourning the loss of the Rev. Dr. Joanna Moseley Adams, one of our founders and a woman whose compassion helped change what was possible for families experiencing homelessness in Atlanta.

Nearly four decades ago, a volunteer came to Joanna troubled by what she had witnessed at an emergency shelter, where mothers and young children were sent back outside each morning with nowhere safe to go.

“Where in the world are that mother and baby going?” she was asked.

The question haunted Joanna, so she picked up the phone to rally others to find a solution.
Within nine months, congregations, volunteers and community partners had come together around an answer. In March 1988, Our House opened its doors.

Today, thousands of children and families have come through doors she helped open, and we are profoundly grateful for the courage, compassion and conviction she brought to this work.
Joanna was a pastor, teacher, advocate and friend to many. She was funny, fearless and without pretension and we are grateful beyond measure for her life and for all she gave to Our House and this community.

Our hearts are with her husband, Al, their children and grandchildren, her congregations, friends and everyone who loved her.

Her absence will be deeply felt. So will the responsibility she leaves with us: to keep opening doors, bringing people together and building answers where none yet exist.

For a parent living in an extended-stay hotel, going to see a doctor can require several bus rides, unpaid hours away from work and bringing young children along for the trip.

Our House Health provides free primary care, behavioral and mental healthcare, reproductive health services, chronic care management, testing, physicals, medication assistance and other essential services for children and adults who don’t have insurance.

Walk-ins are welcome Monday through Friday. MARTA passes and Uber rides are also available for patients who need help reaching the clinic.
