This weekend marked World Homeless Day, a moment to recognize the many different circumstances that can leave a family without a safe, stable place to live.
For Katy, that moment came after completing residential treatment for alcohol addiction. She was working to maintain her sobriety, care for her young son, Peyton, and find somewhere they could stay together.
Late one night, while searching for options, Katy found Our House.
She didn’t know then how much that discovery would change the year ahead.
When we caught up with Katy one year later, she reflected on the people she met, what she learned about herself and the life she and Peyton were building after leaving Our House.

When a family is in crisis, a parent’s own health can quickly fall to the bottom of the list as they focus on addressing the most urgent needs.
Anxiety, depression or trauma may go untreated, making it even harder to manage work, daily responsibilities and housing instability.
New Atlanta Women’s Foundation research found that 90% of surveyed grantee staff were seeing anxiety among clients, 83% reported depression and 76% reported trauma or PTSD. Yet only 23% of providers surveyed offered integrated or co-located care.
Our House Health offers behavioral and mental healthcare alongside primary care for eligible people experiencing homelessness or housing instability, people who are uninsured and experiencing financial hardship, and Georgia Medicaid patients.
Mental health services are available by appointment.

Every Wednesday, we'll share current items Our House needs to support families across our shelter and programs.

Some weeks that may mean diapers or formula. Other weeks it could be sheets, cleaning supplies, personal care items or something completely different.

This week, we need Enfamil Ready-to-Feed Baby Formula (NeuroPro Gentlease and NeuroPro).

Reliable, high-quality childcare can affect nearly every part of a family’s day.
For a parent, knowing a child is safe, learning and cared for can make it easier to work, pursue training, attend appointments or focus on next steps for the family.
For a young child, those same hours provide opportunities to learn, build relationships, receive nutritious meals and develop the skills that help prepare them for kindergarten and beyond.
And those early experiences can have an impact long after preschool. Quality early learning helps build a foundation for stronger educational and developmental outcomes, expanding a child’s opportunities as they grow.
That is why early childhood education is such an important part of the work at Our House. We are investing in children during some of their most important developmental years while helping parents create greater stability and opportunity for the entire family.

For families already balancing work, childcare, transportation and bills, healthcare can easily get pushed down the list, especially when cost is a concern.
Our House Health offers free, comprehensive healthcare for eligible children and adults, including primary care, school and employment exams, reproductive health services, behavioral and mental healthcare, chronic care management and laboratory services.
Our team can also help with some of the practical issues that make it harder to stay on top of your health, including transportation assistance, medication support and coordinating ongoing care.
General clinical services are available on a walk-in basis, while mental health services are available by appointment.

FAQ: Do I have to live in the shelter to get help from Our House?
No.
And this is one of the most important things we want Atlanta families to know about Our House.
Our programs reach far beyond our shelter walls. Families may come to us for free healthcare, early childhood education, employment training, Rapid Rehousing, Family Advocacy or another form of support.
One family may need a doctor. Another may be looking for quality early learning for a young child. Someone else may need job training or help navigating housing instability.
Tell us what your most immediate need is, and we can help you understand what resources may be available to your family.

Leaving an abusive relationship can create a housing crisis almost overnight.
An abusive partner may have controlled money, damaged credit, interfered with employment or isolated a parent from the people they would normally turn to for help.
When a parent decides to leave, finding somewhere safe for the entire family can become part of the crisis.
October is Domestic Violence Awareness Month.
Domestic violence is one of many circumstances that can contribute to housing instability for the families who come to Our House.
We meet families where they are, connecting them with housing, healthcare, early childhood education, employment services, Family Advocacy and other resources that can help them rebuild.

One of the questions we hear often is whether someone has to be experiencing homelessness or live in our shelter to receive help from Our House. The answer is no.

Our long-term shelter and Rapid Rehousing programs are specifically designed to address housing instability, but several other services are available to eligible community members across Metro Atlanta.

Our Early Childhood Education program enrolls eligible children aged 6 weeks through 5 years from families with low incomes, including families experiencing homelessness or housing instability.

Children do not have to live in our shelter, and Georgia Pre-K is available to Georgia residents who are 4 years old by September 1 regardless of household income.

Our House Health provides free comprehensive care to people in the community who are uninsured and have low incomes, as well as people experiencing homelessness or housing instability.

Employment Training is also available outside of shelter residency, with eligibility determined by the requirements of each program.
