It is with profound sadness that sclc/W.O.M.E.N. Inc. acknowledges the transition of a towering giant, Rev. Jesse L. Jackson, Sr.

Rev. Jackson was a 'prophetic witness' who spent six decades dismantling oppression. From his leadership alongside Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. to his historic presidential runs, his life embodied the power of conviction.

He taught us that hope is a responsibility, leaving a legacy that will inspire generations.

We extend our deepest condolences to the Jackson family and the Rainbow PUSH Coalition. We honor his memory by continuing the fight for the 'Beloved Community' he so fiercely championed.

Somalia is the daughter of Sir Wesley Gilliard, Sr. and Dr. Kenya Gilliard. She is a senior at Coretta Scott King Young Women’s Leadership Academy and was recently named Salutatorian for the Class or 2023. Somalia is also the Student Body President and embraces the sisterhood that has developed during her seven years tenure as a middle and high school student at CSK. Often described as a leader and advocate for change, Somalia paid tribute to Mrs. Coretta Scott King during the annual MLK Commemorative Service and referenced her shero by eloquently restating one of her favorite quotes, “It doesn’t matter how strong your opinions are. If you don’t use your power for positive change, you are, indeed, part of the problem.” — Coretta Scott King

Somalia attributes her leadership and advocacy skills to the instructional knowledge provided by the staff at CSK and the civic engagement foundation received as a mentee with the SCLC Women, Incorporated, 100 Black Men of Atlanta, GA State’s Early College Program and Project ENGAGES. She is also a CTAE Pathway completer and a scholar athlete on the Varsity Swim, Cross Country and Track teams. She will attend Alabama A&M University as a Propel and 5 Strong Scholar. Somalia dreams of becoming a Dermatologist; and plans to develop an organic line of beauty products that reduces the amount of harmful chemicals women are exposed to in traditional cosmetic lines.
