Healthy Mothers, Healthy Babies Coalition of Georgia

Healthy Mothers, Healthy Babies Coalition of Georgia Our mission is to improve maternal and infant health through advocacy, education, and access to vital resources.

Connect to the HMHBGA Care Line by calling 866-985-2598. HMHB is a non-profit organization that has been working to improve access to healthcare for Georgia's women and children since 1973. Originally called the Continuum Alliance, HMHB has over 40 years of experience advocating, educating, and connecting families throughout the state to healthcare services. One of the ways HMHB connects Georgians

to resources is through the bilingual information referral call center. The call center is a statewide 800 number that links Georgians to resources in their community. Incoming calls address a variety of concerns including affordable health services, the Women, Infants, and Children program, and child abuse prevention resources. HMHB also performs outgoing calls on behalf of Children 1st, a program that reaches out to the families of infants born with certain risk factors. These calls are designed to provide families with resources to support their child’s development. HMHB also has the most comprehensive healthcare database in the state of Georgia, which lists available resources for every county. This database includes providers who accept Medicaid/Peachcare patients or offer low cost/sliding scale fees for services. HMHB specialists use this database to make referrals and inform Georgians about healthcare resources. In addition to making referrals, HMHB’s outreach program offers information regarding maternal and child health directly to local communities. Traveling throughout the state, HMHB offers educational classes in English and Spanish that cover topics such as prenatal care, proper breastfeeding techniques, and perinatal HIV prevention. HMHB also engages in advocacy work to help expand legislation that supports health care for women, babies and families. HMHB promotes a variety of issues including: increasing the state’s tobacco tax to meet the national average, incentivizing doctors to treat Medicaid/Peachcare patients by increasing reimbursement rates, improving access to prenatal care, and approving state licensure of qualified breastfeeding consultants to promote safe breastfeeding.

🚨 This is a BIG win for maternal health.

The American College of Obstetricians and Gynecologists (ACOG) has released new guidance encouraging OB-GYNs to partner more effectively with doulas—recognizing what birth workers and families have known for years: collaboration leads to better care.

When doulas and healthcare providers work together, families benefit. 💜

Research continues to show that doula support is associated with:
✨ Improved birth experiences
✨ Better communication between patients and providers
✨ Fewer unnecessary interventions
✨ Increased breastfeeding success
✨ More equitable maternal health outcomes

This guidance is an important step toward breaking down barriers and building stronger partnerships between clinical teams and community-based birth workers.

At Healthy Mothers, Healthy Babies Coalition of Georgia, we are proud to be part of this movement through initiatives like our Doula Integration & Awareness Project (DIAAP), which focuses on strengthening collaboration, improving communication, and supporting respectful, team-based maternity care.

Healthy moms. Healthy babies. Strong partnerships. That’s the future of maternal health.

Looking back on an incredible season of supporting Georgia families through Nurture ATL! 💜

Nearly two months ago, we gathered at the Nurture ATL Wellness Fair for an afternoon of education, connection, and community—and what a beautiful day it was!

Families enjoyed free lactation support, educational resources, local vendors, food, giveaways, and meaningful conversations with experts dedicated to improving maternal and infant health.

We were honored to hear from:
💜 Stacy Ann Louie (Gwinnett Breastfeeding) , who shared the importance and history of Black breastfeeding.
💜 Israel Route (ReachingOurBrothersEverywhere), who highlighted the vital role partners and loved ones play in breastfeeding success.
💜 Tiah Tomlin Harris (My Style Matters) , who educated families on breast anatomy, breast cancer warning signs, and how everyday products can impact both mother and baby.

But Nurture ATL was so much more than one event.

Through this initiative, we:
✨ Produced culturally relevant breastfeeding education videos for Georgia families (link in bio!).
✨ Hosted three free breastfeeding education workshops.
✨ Brought families and community resources together through the Nurture ATL Wellness Fair.
✨ Expanded access to lactation services through reimbursement opportunities.
✨ Helped distribute more of our highly requested Perinatal Care Packages (P*P Kits).
✨ Distributed infant, toddler, and booster car seats to families.

Every part of this initiative was rooted in one goal: ensuring families have access to the education, resources, and support they need to make informed feeding decisions and experience healthier outcomes.

A heartfelt THANK YOU to Project HOPE (Project HOPE ) for investing in Georgia families through Nurture ATL. Your partnership helped expand access to culturally responsive lactation education and support, creating an impact that will continue long after this initiative.

To everyone who attended, partnered with us, volunteered, spoke, or supported this work—thank you for helping us build healthier communities.

Because healthy mothers lead to healthy babies. 💜
