Micah and Victoria, both Littles in Cherokee County, recently handcrafted candy dispensers in a woodworking class hosted by John Lachance and Bruce Peck of Acorn Woodworks. Micah and Victoria learned some practical life skills while using real builders' tools. And they felt the pride of creating a beautiful piece of art that they can use every day.

John, a BBBS Cherokee Advisory Council member (as is Bruce), even snuck in some lessons in math and science. Acorn Woodworks, in Murphy, is a long-time BBBS supporter.

“Both our Littles and our Bigs always look forward to these classes,” BBBS Cherokee Program Coordinator Sarah Wildsmith said. “They leave each session with a sense of accomplishment and confidence that will last a lifetime.”

Bigs and Littles in Burke County gathered at the park this past Sunday for an afternoon of fall fun! We painted pumpkins, enjoyed pizza, and created our own snacks at the trail mix bar.

We also learned about the life cycle of a pumpkin and explored emotions by drawing expressive faces on pumpkin worksheets. It was a wonderful afternoon of creativity, connection, and making memories together!

The BBBS Polk Resource Fair on Oct. 24 connected BBBS families and Polk County residents with organizations that address mental health, domestic violence, utilities assistance, food assistance, and education. The kids left with buckets full of goodies! BBBS believes in supporting not only Littles and their families, but also the communities they live in.

It's New Match Monday, and we have a bunch of new High School Bigs in Polk County. But first, here are a couple of Community-Based matches.

In Haywood County, new Big Sister Maureen and Little Sister Aislyn’s first outing will be arts and crafts at Michaels for a halloween craft. They both love crafts.

In Polk, this community-based match made an instant connection over their love of shopping! Olive, now a seventh-grader, has been a Little Sister in our High School Big program for years, and she’s excited to be matched with Big Sister Lisa. The two are designing a BBBS holiday card for this year.

Here are some of our new High School Bigs in Polk County.

Big Sister Mia and Little Brother Leland are very excited! Mia loves being a sister to her three younger brothers at home. Leland, who doesn’t have a sister, loves to make paper airplanes and is looking forward to teaching Mia about all the different designs.

Big Brother Jayvin and Little Brother Pacey are both quiet and like to have fun. They are looking forward to doing some artwork and playing games.

Big Sister Amelia and Little Sister Zoe share a love of horses and riding. They are looking forward to talking about horses and making bracelets. Zoe wants to show horses when she gets older.

Big Sister Gabby and Little Sister Melody became instant friends over their love for the color pink. They plan on making bracelets, playing on the playground, and talking.

Big Sister Jocelyn and Little Brother Mason can’t wait to play games and run out to the playground. Mason's smile sums up his excitement!

Big Sister Olivia and Little Brother Pablo started playing the game Headbandz right off. Pablo is a little shy, but Olivia's kind personality made him feel more comfortable. They look forward to doing whatever activity they can get into.

Big Brother Rocco has been boxing for years and now he trains kids. His new Little Brother Weston recently started riding dirt bikes, so the two have sports in common. They plan to see each other twice a week.

In Transylvania County, Little Sister Isabelle (left) and her new High School Big Sister Payton are looking forward to getting to know one another and starting some fun art projects. As an added bonus, Payton is a good friend of Isabelle's Big Sister from last year, so they already have lots in common.

At the WNC Nature Center on Saturday, our matches braved chilly temperatures to be treated by active animals feeling frisky! The invigorating change in temperatures meant many of the park’s inhabitants were out, alert, and engaged.

Bigs and Littles enjoyed guided tours of the park, plus animal-themed activities and coloring sheets. Complimentary snack bags full of goodies included, you guessed it, animal crackers!

"As a Big to a 13-year-old Little Sister, I love how my BBBS team makes it easy to create great memories that build our relationship," said Ashley. "BBBS’s seasonal free events and group activities, plus regularly updated local businesses offerings of complementary and deeply discounted experiences, offer many ways to have fun with my Little Sister. BBBSWNC board members ZaKiya Bell-Rogers, Veronica Colvard, and Melissa Moore and staffers cheered the runners, walkers (and everyone who put a foot forward) during the recent AVL Runway 5K! Being close to planes taking off and landing at the airport was truly a unique experience. It was also great to spread awareness of our work igniting the power and promise of youth.

Bigs are never alone in a match. Little Brother Matthew and Big Brother Michael, a School-Based match at North Windy Ridge Intermediate School in Buncombe County, get support from BBBS Program Coordinator Gina Elrod (with them in photo).

School-Based Bigs, needed throughout the 18 Western North Carolina counties we serve, meet with their Little at their school for up to an hour once a week. Together the match does whatever the child needs, whether it’s help with schoolwork or having lunch together.

Little Brother Cayden helped man our table at the LEAF fall festival in Cashiers recently. Attendees learned more about BBBS while looking at the offerings of some 100 artisans.
