Fresh food is coming to Ira B. Jones Elementary School! Bountiful Cities is excited to be partnering with United Way of Asheville and Buncombe County to bring fresh food to community resource rooms in our partner schools.

We got this fridge donated from Caja Solidaria for Jones Elementary and Fredericka Pasley, United Way Community School Coordinator showed her strength moving the fridge into the school!

Today we delivered cabbages, carrots, potatoes and onions for school families. We look forward to sharing lots of veggies in the months to come!

We are hosting a volunteer workday at the West Asheville Park Food Forest at 198 Vermont Ave down by the baseball fields on Monday, September 14th from 1pm - 4pm and would love to see you there!

We will be caring for the trees by performing w**d management, planting to combat invasives, and performing general maintenance of the trees and space. Water, snacks, and tools will be provided. No experience is necessary and this is a kid friendly event. There is some poison ivy present in the forest so please wear long pants if possible.

If you have any questions, you can reach out to our Asheville Edibles Coordinator at [email protected]. This event is in partnership with the City of Asheville's Office of Recovery and Resilience.

We got to be with them at their Sunday celebration to talk about our work and we look forward to having them at our event on Sept. 26th! 🧄 The Share Market is a marvelous place to share a skill or passion! We’re grateful to have Phoenix, one of our amazing interns from Asheville High, using her skills to sharpen knives during today’s market from 3:45–5 pm 🧄

🫑 It makes such a difference in food prep to have a freshly honed blade. Got a knife that needs a little tender loving care? Bring it along when you come pick up some fruits and veggies to chop this week 🫑

Don't Want to Compost at Home?

That's okay!
Community food scrap drop-off sites make it easy to keep food scraps out of the landfill—no backyard compost pile required.
Just:
🥕 Collect your food scraps.
📍 Drop them off at a participating site.
♻️ Repeat.

Before you get started, take a minute to register for the free City of Asheville/Buncombe County Food Scraps Drop-Off Program. Registration helps the City track participation, may be needed to access some drop-off locations, and you'll receive a free countertop compost bin while supplies last.

The new school year is underway, and so are FEAST classes!

Last Friday, students at Hot Springs Elementary headed back to the garden to harvest flowers, Japanese cucumbers, and more. They also explored and added scraps to the brand-new compost bins we rebuilt over the summer.

The lumber for the bins came from trees that fell during Helene and were milled through the UNCA STEAM Studio Community Lumber Project, making them extra special. This project was also made possible through a Growing Communities grant from AgSouth.

We’re so glad to have kids back in the garden and so grateful for the community support that helps make this work possible!

It may not be a birdhouse but this beautiful handmade guitar will be one of our auction items at the Bountiful Cities Birdhouse Auction! It also seems fitting that on this first week of school we honor Shephard - longtime Asheville High School Social Studies teacher for his dedication! He is now retired and has been making beautiful instruments in his retirement - this one is number 47!! He donated it to Bountiful Cities to help support our long-term food security work!

If you know Howard - please give him a shout out here for being so awesome and spending hours and hours making this gorgeous instrument!

Howard says....
"This may be the best guitar I've ever made. I built my first guitar under the instruction of Wayne Henderson in 1989. In the more than 35 years since then, I have continued to build instruments whenever I could find free time from my job. After retiring in 2020 from a teaching career at Asheville HIgh School, I have devoted most of my free time to instrument construction.

In addition to guitars, I have built a handful of ukuleles and mountain dulcimers. To date, I have built about 50 stringed instruments. This guitar is #47. The body is a Martin 00 size, with a longer (25.4”) scale length. It is effectively a Martin OM guitar, with a slightly smaller body. The back, sides, neck, and peghead veneer are maple. The top is German spruce. The tuning machines are Grover Rotomatics. It is currently strung with lightweight strings (gauges 11 to 52)."
