This growing season, the FEAST program is piloting a new collaboration with the Center for Environmental Farming Systems of NC State to host 3 interns from Asheville High School through their WNC Strong Youth Service Corps program!

These interns will be working at our Pearson Garden and Food Hub, Lucy S. Herring Peace Garden, and our Share Markets so they can engage in learning about the big picture of hyper-local food systems and urban agriculture work.

WNC Strong Youth Service Corps offers high school sophomores and juniors in WNC a paid, work-based learning experience that supports resilient food and agricultural systems in our region. Along the way, they learn about food systems, careers in agriculture, and develop leadership and career-readiness skills with the support of a teacher mentor.

We are so excited to grow our FEAST program to be part of educating and mentoring the next generation of farmers!

🌱 Hall Fletcher Fifth Graders Coming to Share Market! 🌱
For their service learning project, a group of fifth graders at Hall Fletcher were so inspired by their FEAST classes that they wanted to support food security efforts in our community in connection to their school garden. They harvested greens from the garden and made pesto using a recipe they previously made during FEAST class. Look for their table at the Share Market this week so you can sample their delicious garden-fresh pesto!

Over the course of the last month, a group of fifth graders at Lucy S. Herring Elementary embarked on a service learning project that resulted in a beautiful birdhouse for our Birdhouse Auction Fundraiser. The students designed and built the birdhouse with help from Mr. Julian, a relative of an LSH family and carpenter by trade.

We love when students are empowered to brainstorm, design, and complete projects, especially when it doubles as an opportunity to give back to their community!

This semester, our FEAST Program has begun piloting new programming that brings students from Asheville Middle School and Asheville High School to our gardens and FEAST classes.

First, we collaborated with Asheville High's Future Farmer of America (FFA) group to come teach lessons about strawberries to FEAST students at Hall Fletcher, Lucy Herring, and Isaac Dickson. Many of the FFA students were former FEAST students themselves whose interest in farming as a career stems from their time learning and growing in our school gardens.

Then in April, the entire 7th grade cohort from Asheville Middle School ventured out to work in community gardens across Asheville as part of a service learning component of Expeditionary Learning’s Better World Week and culmination of their human body systems science unit where students have been developing a greater understanding of how healthy eating is essential. Crews of students volunteered at the Pearson Garden Food Hub, Lucy Herring Peace Garden, and Hall Fletcher Garden, as well as Burton Street Peace Gardens, Sandhill Community Garden, and Southside Farm, which are all part of our Community Garden Network. These students worked so hard doing all kinds of projects from weeding to moving garden borders, to transplanting seedlings into larger pots and painting signs. We built new relationships with their teachers and started coming up with all kinds of ideas for future collaborations!

Finally, we are so excited to be collaborating with the Center for Environmental Farming Systems of NC State to host 3 interns from Asheville High School this growing season through their Youth Corps program. These interns will be working at our Pearson Garden and Food Hub, Lucy S Herring Peace Garden, and our Share Markets so they can engage in learning about the big picture of our food systems and urban agriculture work.

We are so glad to be connecting more students to local food system work and careers, cultivating opportunities for peer mentorship, and ultimately connecting youth with local healthy food!

Few sights are more lovely than little baby seedlings just beginning their journeys to become vegetables. We're grateful to have Master Gardener Mary Brady bringing seedlings to the Share Market yet again this Wednesday! She's nurtured them all spring and is happy to share tips for welcoming them into your own garden, yard or even windowsill. Come join us to pick up some fresh food and free seedlings, connect with neighbors, and collect some gardening wisdom!

Our next Share Market is Weds 5/13 at William Randolph Campus (90 Montford Ave) 3pm-5pm.
