🌱 Growing Together This Fall! 🧄

We’re so grateful for the community partners who help make fall planting possible!

Over the past month, Gaia Herbs and The Farm Connection generously donated fall seedlings to our school gardens and Pearson Food Hub, and Sow True Seed donated garlic and shallot bulbs to be shared with our school and community garden partners.

It’s partnerships like these that help us grow a more food-abundant community. Collaboration and teamwork really do make the dream work!

🍏🍎 We're serious-- please come take some of these tasty apples off our hands! We're delighted to be distributing over 500 lbs of apples TODAY at the Share Market, 3-5pm at William Randolph School Gym. Anyone is welcome to join us and take home some fresh produce! We hope you'll join us, and let us know your favorite apple recipes! 🍎🍏

Our Garden Network shared a beautiful evening of learning, connecting, and celebrating our local gardening community!

We toured the compost facility, gardens, root cellar (with HUGE candy roasters!) and orchard at Warren Wilson College and learned more about the incredible work happening there. They have donated hundreds of pounds of veggies from their gardens to Bountiful Cities Share Markets.

A huge thank you to Peri Moss, who directs the Garden and Compost Program at WWC, for sharing their knowledge and giving us a closer look at their work.

We ended the evening with a sweet potluck in the orchard, sharing good food and learning about the many skills, resources, and offerings that gardeners in our region bring to the table.

We are grateful for opportunities like these to connect with fellow growers, share knowledge, and strengthen the relationships that help our local food system thrive.

On Friday, 10/2, more than 40 school farm and garden leaders and educators from across WNC came together to connect, share ideas and resources, and begin building a stronger community of school garden educators and partners. The goal is to create a network where participants can learn from one another, share practical tools and experiences, and strengthen the role of school gardens as hubs for learning, resource sharing, and community building.

Participants engaged in meaningful, intentional conversations around topics such as integrating gardens into school curricula, fundraising, and garden planning and management, while enjoying delicious food prepared by Equal Plates Project. Everyone walked away with new connections to follow up on, fresh inspiration, and ideas for furthering their own goals.

After recognizing a growing need for resource sharing, mentorship, and support among schools cultivating gardens and farms, leaders from ASAP Growing Minds, Bountiful Cities’ FEAST program, the NCSU Center for Environmental Farming Systems (CEFS), the North Carolina Community Schools Coalition, and Historic Johnson Farm decided to take action.

We look forward to seeing how this network and collaboration continue to grow—and how they can support getting more kids’ hands in the dirt and growing food!

🌿 Have some late-season abundance to share but not enough time to harvest? Let us know! We were honored to pick these gorgeous eggplants, basil, squash, peppers, and even kiwis(!) from Casey's magical garden in Asheville this weekend. It's amazing how much food can be grown on just 0.7 of an acre! 🌿

When you want to save 500+ lbs of rotting tomatoes from ending up in the landfill, you need many capable friends. 🍅♻️

The story of our compost rescue mission began when our friends at the PODER Emma resilience hub received a pallet of donated tomatoes, most of which were too moldy to distribute. The tomatoes were packaged in plastic pints, and without another option, they were headed for the landfill.

We reached out to friends and community partners for help. Marlise, a student at Warren Wilson College, showed up on short notice to transport the tomatoes and worked with our Food Distribution Coordinator, Rosemary, to make a plan.

Our friends at Swannanoa Communities Together accepted a truckbed full of tomatoes, sorted through them, shared what was still edible, and added the rest to their community garden compost. Thank you Steve and Kesslyn!

The Warren Wilson College Garden CORE Crew handled the rest, depackaging the tomatoes and adding them to compost batches over the following weeks. We recycled as much of the packaging as possible. Thank you Jed, Riley, Emmanuelle, Marlise, Maya, Kai, and the whole crew!

Together, more than 500 lbs of past-edible food was transformed into compost that will nourish the next season of crops. Bit by bit, we’re building the kind of food system we want to be part of—diverting food waste from the landfill, connecting community resources, and sharing fresh food.
