In order to engage students, educators, families, community partners, and the public in our daily work, ACSF maintains several social media platforms, including but not limited to Facebook and Instagram. ACSF encourages our students, educators, board, staff, supporters, partners, and the public to share comments which relate to a topic being discussed on any of our social media platforms in a productive and non-threatening manner, and consistent with our values. ACSF accepts the majority of comments made on our platforms, and answers questions about our policies, programs, procedures, and protocols within a timely manner (within 48 business hours) as long as those questions are not in violation of the parameters outlined below. A question or comment will be deleted if it contains:
Hate speech
Profanity, obscenity or vulgarity
Defamation to a person or people
Name calling and/or personal attacks
Comments where the main purpose is to sell a product
Comments that are intended to be inflammatory
Comments that infringe on copyrights
Spam comments, such as the same comment posted repeatedly on a profile
Off-topic or irrelevant information
Comments that contain personal information about the author or another individual
Misinformation
Photographs that are offensive/graphic in nature

ACSF retains the right to determine which comments violate this policy and to remove such comments. Repeated violations of the ACSF Social Media Comment Policy may cause the author to be blocked from communicating on ACSF social media platforms. On ACSF private and public social media platforms, the views expressed within comments do not necessarily reflect those of ACSF. Imagine spending class standing at the top of , looking out over the mountains we call home. 🌿

8th graders recently took the hike to the top of Chimney Rock, exploring local organisms and ecosystems, and connecting their science lessons to the natural world right in our own backyard.

After Hurricane Helene, our mountains are still recovering. Getting students out to experience this place firsthand helps them connect with the land, understand the environment around them, and appreciate the natural beauty we’re still working to protect.

Through ACSF’s Field Trip Fund, we’re proud to help make these hands-on learning experiences possible, bringing classroom lessons to life and deepening students’ connections to the place they call home. 💚 Want to support this work? Fourth graders at Isaac Dickson Elementary stepped into history as Becky Stone brought civil rights activist and scholar Dr. Pauli Murray to life through a Chautauqua performance.

As students connected Dr. Murray’s experiences to the Great Depression, the Civil Rights Movement, and the fight for educational rights for women and people of color, their questions carried the learning beyond the performance. Dr. Murray used her words to stand up to a world that told her what she could and couldn’t do. Isaac Dickson fourth graders connected her story to the history they know, the world they live in, and the future they will help shape.

We’ve all asked it: but where does the water GO?! 💦

Trailblazers, our In Real Life After-School club in partnership with the North Carolina Sierra Club, takes learning outside and into our local rivers and streams! This week, through hands-on exploration and experimentation, students got to investigate how water moves through our environment and connect with the natural world right here in Asheville.

Experiences like these make learning an adventure! Students get to ask questions, explore their surroundings, and discover why caring for the places we call home matters. ♥️

We’re grateful to the Sierra Club for partnering with Asheville City Schools Foundation as an IRL club provider and helping students explore, enjoy, and protect the world around them. 🌳

One book can open up a whole new world! 📚

From October 13-18, The Mule at Devil’s Foot Beverage and Devil's Foot Beverage are bringing the Scholastic book fair back to Asheville! Come grab a soda, find your next great read and support Asheville City Schools students and educators!

Mark your calendars for Sunday, October 18 2-4 PM as we send the book fair off with a celebration featuring a special watercolor workshop with artist, Micaiah Darity! Children of all ages are welcome and participants will learn to paint their own storybook characters. 🎨

The state curriculum hits different when you put it to a beat! 🎶

This week, fourth graders at Claxton Elementary brought their North Carolina unit to life through music with Virtuous Music.

As students explored our state’s geography, history, government, culture, and economy, they learned the building blocks of songwriting, experimented with rhythm and beat-making, and wrote their own four-line verses about North Carolina, with a special focus on Asheville.

What happens when students get to create something with what they’ve learned? The learning becomes their own.

Virtuous Music is a new artist in our 2026-27 TAPAS catalog. Through TAPAS (Teaching Artists Presenting in Asheville Schools), ACSF brings professional teaching artists into our schools to connect arts experiences with classroom learning.

Neverland is coming to life in IRL! 🎭

Theatre club spent today rehearsing their scenes from Peter Pan and mastering the ultimate tongue twister from The Mikado. If you know you know: a cheap and chippy chopper on a big black block. 🎶

We also had a surprise collaboration today in theater club! Stay tuned 👀

What if you could learn to build something once and carry that skill with you for the rest of your life?

That’s what we’re doing in IRL! In partnership with our friends at UNCA’s skillsetprogram, our girls and gender expansive students are learning woodworking by actually doing it. They’ve recently finished their pencil holders, they’re building triangle shelves now, and next they’ll design and build a shelf of their own!

This goes way beyond learning how to use a saw or measure a piece of wood. Skillset in IRL is about learning to look at something and think: I could make that! It’s learning to work through the part of the design that doesn’t go right, to use tools with confidence, to make something useful, and to make something that’s yours.

This is the kind of learning that kids need access to after the school day ends. Learning that build skills, confidence, independence, and a sense of what’s possible prepared our students for life and that is what IN REAL LIFE is all about. ♥️

During the 2024-2025 school year we started hearing from 9th graders who had been part of In Real Life After-School in middle school: "What’s next for me?"

They had built relationships, tried new things, found their voices and started seeing themselves as leaders through IRL- but after middle school, there was a gap. They couldn’t become DREAM mentors until 10th grade, so we tried something new!

We piloted DREAM Bridge in spring 2025, giving 9th graders a place to stay connected to ACSF, keep building leadership skills and get ready for the opportunities waiting for them in 10th, 11th and 12th grade. The 2025-2026 school year was our first full year of DREAM Bridge. Now, in year two, almost the entire cohort comes to us having participated in IRL as a middle schooler.

This is bigger picture we’re working toward: a leadership continuum where students don’t have to start over every time they enter a new program. They build on what they’ve already learned, carry relationships with them, take on new challenges and keep finding new ways to lead. One experience leads right into the next.

We want students to leave high school feeling ready for life beyond it, and getting there means noticing a gap and building a bridge to help them cross it.

Since 2000, ACSF has awarded more than $3.9 million in scholarships to Asheville High and SILSA graduates. Today, we are committed to awarding more than $250,000 in new and renewing scholarships each year to support students as they take their next steps after graduation.

The ACSF scholarship application is officially OPEN through February 1, 2027.

The process is simple: One application. One scholarship match.
You complete one application, and we’ll match you with the scholarship you best fit.
