We serve over 450+ learners each year through our Adult Literacy, Youth Literacy and ESOL programs. Literacy Together, a non-profit organization accredited by ProLiteracy America and serving the community since 1987, provides highly individualized tutoring to fit the needs of over 350 students annually in three programs: Adult Education, English for Speakers of Other Languages (ESOL), and Youth Literacy Program.

We love supporting all of the great events happening in our community. Here is ESOL Program Director Erin Sebelius and students enjoyed an evening of Latin music and Salsa dancing at Asheville's Downtown After 5.

Did you know ESOL is the largest program at Literacy Together, serving approximately 250 students annually? If you’re interested in learning about our ESOL program, or want to learn how to volunteer with our program, visit the link below.

Calvin teaches our group ESOL class at Bounty & Soul in Swannanoa. This month he asked students to draw a map of downtown streets and label the buildings. Students then worked together to ask for and give directions from one location to the next.

Many of our tutors find that supplementing the curriculum with real-life texts and tasks really motivates students because they can use their new skills to navigate real-life situations and challenges!

Are you curious about becoming a tutor? Sign up for our next informational meeting on June 9th at 6pm or June 11th at 10am. Find out more and register here:

⭐️Student Spotlight⭐️

Four years ago, Cristhian stepped off a plane in the mountains of western North Carolina and into a new life. Since then, he’s run hundreds of miles in the mornings before work at Pisgah Legal Services, where he helps Spanish-speaking clients seeking pro bono legal services.

Each week after work, he heads to Literacy Together to meet with his tutor MaryPaul to work on his English pronunciation, writing, and preparation for the U.S. Naturalization Exam.
All that hard work is paying off.

Cristhian recently completed his first marathon and he’s applying to graduate school in social work, hoping to advance his career as a bilingual professional helping others overcome the challenges before them.

Did you know we are in the process of creating a Student Advisory Council?

With support from The Industrial Commons we are thrilled to report a new opportunity for students at Literacy Together.

We are looking for students in any of our programs (Adult, Youth, and English for Speakers for Other Languages) who want to help make Literacy Together better for everyone.

Members of the council will meet regularly to share their ideas, and this is a PAID opportunity.

Students who are interested should talk to their tutor, or their program director! We can’t wait to share more about the work of this council in the coming months!

⭐️ Applications are due by May 18.

Thank you to our friends at Champion Credit Union for stopping by a recent professional development workshop for our Literacy Leader interns.

Interns had in-depth conversations around credit cards, in-person vs. online banking, fraud awareness, and budgeting. These young adults asked questions and got real advice as they began planning their futures.

Thank you, Champion Credit Union, for your support!

It's National Volunteer Appreciation Week. 🎉

Literacy Together is a network of more than 350 volunteers, individuals who show up for at least two hours a week to support learning needs in our community.

We are grateful to each and every one of you!

Last week, more than 45 individuals from Literacy Together's ESOL program attended the United Way volunteer appreciation Asheville Tourists baseball game. Tutors, students, staff, and their friends and family enjoyed a gorgeous night at the ballpark. Thank you, United Way! ❤️

Interested in becoming a Literacy Leader this summer? Hear Aliyah’s story:

Last spring, Aliyah, a junior at The Franklin School of Innovation (FSI), was searching for a meaningful internship—something that would offer both purpose and a competitive wage for summer employment. She came across Literacy Together’s summer internship for high school students and decided to apply. She encouraged her sister, Ariel, to apply as well.

Once both sisters were accepted into the program, our Youth Literacy Program Director, Elyse Hurley, worked with them to place both sisters at the same site at the Christine W. Avery Learning Center, allowing their family to navigate one summer schedule. Even though the girls had other internship options, they found they were glad to have landed at Literacy Together.

Neither Aliyah nor Ariel had initially planned to work with children when looking for an internship, but the experience proved unexpectedly rewarding. Each day, they supported young students in building confidence in reading and learning. They were surprised by how easily they could connect with children, learning how to respond to their emotions and meet them where they were.

The Literacy Leaders summer internship includes professional development opportunities on financial literacy and career readiness each week. Interns receive real work experience alongside structured training toward their career and college goals.

If you, or a high school student you know, are interested in applying for the 2026 summer internship, please reach out to Program Director Elyse Hurley at [email protected] or click the link below. Applications open until May 4th.
