A lot to celebrate. A lot still to change. 🍃

There’s plenty to be proud of in reaching 40 years. It reflects the many people who have got behind the Foodbank and supported others through difficult times.

But it also means that, for four decades, people in our community have continued to experience hardship and need somewhere to turn for food.

As our Chairperson, Taulapapa, reflected at our 40-year event, “When someone turns up at the Foodbank, it’s not our job to judge how they arrived here, the choices they've made or decide whether they're deserving of food.”

Food hardship is not simply about budgeting or individual choices. Sometimes there just isn’t enough coming in to cover food alongside housing, power and the other basics.

For the Foodbank, that means meeting people where they are and providing practical support without judgement.

Looking ahead, success shouldn’t mean a bigger Foodbank or more parcels going out the door. Real success would be fewer people needing to turn to us in the first place.

40 YEARS, MANY HANDS 💚

The Foodbank has never been sustained by one person or one group. It has kept going because people have chosen, year after year, to show up and contribute what they can.

Over 40 years, that’s included our volunteers and committee members, staff, donors, suppliers, schools, churches, local businesses, funders, community organisations and many others who have supported the Foodbank along the way.

That support has looked different over the years - from donated food or funds, supplied goods and services, shared expertise, and community connections.

However you’ve been part of the Foodbank community, past or present, thank you. Forty years of serving Lower Hutt has only been possible because of our community who continue to show up for our people.

40 YEARS OF THE FOODBANK 💚

Last Thursday, we brought together people who have been connected with Lower Hutt Foodbank across four decades.

There were plenty of familiar faces, as well as people meeting for the first time. It was good to see current and former volunteers, supporters and community partners catching up and sharing memories from their time with the Foodbank.

Thank you to everyone who joined us, and to those who helped bring the evening together.

We’ll be sharing more from the event and the Foodbank’s 40-year journey over the coming days. For now, here are a few moments from the evening.
