Beach safety skills can make all the difference. Fulton Hogan Beach Education gives tamariki and rangatahi practical knowledge and confidence to enjoy Aotearoa’s beaches more safely.
Through hands-on learning, students discover how to recognise beach hazards, understand the risks and make safer choices around the water.

ICU nurse Mark Christmas-Oliver found his community at St Clair SLSC after moving to Dunedin from the UK.

Now an IRB national champ and a SAR squad member as well as a club captain, Mark says if he can adjust to lifeguarding after growing up inland in England, then anyone can do it.

In this Club Kōrero, he talks about finding his place in surf lifesaving and why he reckons that if he can become a lifeguard after growing up nowhere near the sea, anyone can.

Meet Naomi Ingram from Warrington Surf Life Saving Club in Dunedin. She joined the club in 2012, after returning to Aotearoa with her family and looking for something for her kids to get involved in locally.

More than a decade later, she’s a qualified lifeguard, canoe racer, committee member, policy contributor and all-around essential part of her club.

And, as Naomi explains, being part of surf lifesaving has changed her life for the better.

That’s what Club Kōrero is all about - meeting the people behind our clubs and hearing what they put in, what they get back, and why they keep showing up.

Meet Mereana Martin from St Clair Surf Life Saving Club in Dunedin.

Mereana is a master's student and a bp Leaders for Life graduate and holds many roles at her club - from Search and Rescue to IRB racing - that make her an essential part of the community.

She’s also the first face in Club Kōrero, our new series sharing the people and stories behind surf lifesaving clubs around Aotearoa.

We’ll be talking to clubbies all over the motu about what they do, why they joined, and what being part of their club means to them.
