We're here to keep Kiwis safe in the water, develop world-class lifeguards, and strengthen the communities that call Aotearoa's coast home.

18/06/2026

Aotearoa’s coastline is one of our greatest treasures.
The volunteers who watch it are one of our greatest strengths.

This National Volunteer Week, we’re celebrating the people who give their time so others can enjoy our beaches safely.

Whether through patrolling, training, educating, or responding when it matters most, their impact is felt right across the motu.

Thank you for the hours you give, the skills you share, and the difference you make in communities across Aotearoa. ❤️💛

Massive congratulations to Mat Bowling!

Mat, Chairperson of Papamoa SLSC, has been selected as New Zealand's delegate for the Surf Life Saving Australia Leaders Masterclass. This July, he'll head to Adelaide to represent Aotearoa. 🇳🇿🇦🇺

It was a seriously competitive field this year, with many outstanding members putting their hands up for this leadership development opportunity. Mat's selection is thoroughly deserved.

An epic achievement, Mat. Represent us proudly! 💛

On Monday night, Surf Life Saving NZ and Aon were proud to be finalists in the Commercial Partnership category at the 2026 Sport New Zealand Awards.

To be recognised alongside some of New Zealand's leading sporting partnerships is a fantastic achievement and reflects our shared commitment to helping keep communities safer.

Congratulations to Basketball New Zealand and BNZ on taking out the category, and to all the finalists recognised on the night.

We're proud of what we've achieved alongside Aon and grateful for their ongoing support of Surf Life Saving NZ. ❤️

Meet your 2026 Ngaru Huhuka crew 💪

We're beyond stoked to announce the 12 members selected for this year's bespoke SLS Ngaru Huhuka Outward Bound course, and what a lineup it is!

From 25 August to 14 September, they'll head to Anakiwa in the Marlborough Sounds to sail, kayak, climb, tramp and push well past what they thought possible. Out there, they'll build confidence, resilience and leadership that reaches far beyond the water's edge.

Ngaru Huhuka means "the foaming wave." Each crew arrives carrying the energy that's brought them this far. Over the course, it builds, peaks and breaks, and they'll carry that home to their clubs, ready to encourage the next generation of lifesavers.

To our 2026 crew, this is your moment. Go make the most of every minute.

Congratulations to the bp Leaders for Life 2026/27 cohort!

Choosing this year's group was challenging, and the number of members putting their hands up says everything about the future of our movement.

Over the next 10 months, this group will travel around the country, from Lyall Bay in Wellington, the birthplace of surf lifesaving in Aotearoa, to Tauranga, Tāmaki Makaurau, Ōtautahi, and Papamoa. Along the way, they’ll connect with inspiring facilitators, guest speakers, a personal mentor.

Massive thanks to bp for 12 years of backing our future leaders. Congratulations everyone, your communities can’t wait to see what you achieve. 💚💛

Love the ocean. Respect the conditions.

As we celebrate our shared love for te moana this World Ocean Day, we'd also like to remind everyone to enjoy the ocean safely.

Before heading out to enjoy any coastal activity, please check the conditions, understand the risks, and make safety your number one priority.

We have a range of easy-to-follow advice available, and we encourage everyone to brush up on the steps we can all take to ensure we return home safely from the beach.

Last Saturday night, our Otago SAR squad was called to the Owaka River mouth in the Catlins after a fishing trip ended with a vessel run aground on an outgoing tide.

Six volunteers. 90-minute drive south. Two IRBs launched into complete darkness. Fifteen minutes to reach them. Everyone home safe by 8.25pm.

Our team was prepared and had trained for nearly this exact scenario at this exact spot last year, an exercise born from a fatal incident at the same river bar in 2024. They knew the launch points. They knew the currents. The locals knew them.

Training saves lives. Local knowledge saves lives. Our volunteers save lives.

Ngā mihi nui to the Otago SAR Team, NZ Police, and the local fishers who helped secure the vessel before the tide came back in.

We’re incredibly proud to be finalists in the Commercial Partnership Award category at the 2026 New Zealand Sport and Recreation Awards alongside our partner Aon New Zealand.

What began as a shared commitment to keeping New Zealanders safe at the beach has grown into a purpose-led partnership creating real impact across beach safety, community engagement, leadership development, and surf lifesaving sport.

From supporting initiatives that help Kiwis make safer decisions around the water to helping bring events like the Aon New Zealand Surf Lifesaving Championships to life, this partnership is built on shared values of community, service, and care for people.

A huge thank you to Aon New Zealand for standing alongside Surf Life Saving New Zealand and supporting our volunteers, athletes, clubs, and communities across Aotearoa.

And congratulations to all finalists recognised this year for the incredible work happening right across the sport and recreation sector.

Strong clubs start with strong leaders.

Huge congratulations to our 18 bp Leaders for Life 2025–26 graduates, who wrapped up a 10-month journey at SLS Kariaotahi on Saturday. Beginning in Papamoa last August, the cohort spent almost a year travelling across Aotearoa for a series of immersive workshops, growing into leaders ready to shape the future of surf lifesaving and their communities.

To our graduates, mentors, facilitators and the wider whānau who made it happen - ngā mihi nui. The ripple effect starts now.

Behind every great programme is a great partner. Thank you , for standing alongside us since 1968 and for continuing to invest in our people. And to Jessica Milch, Health, Safety & Environment Manager at bp, thank you for stepping in as part of the bp Leadership Panel and inspiring our cohort with your own leadership story.
