As the rising of Matariki approaches, let’s focus today on the second guiding principle of Matariki – Celebrating the present | Matariki Ahunga Nui.

Whether it's taking a moment to reflect on what we are grateful for, or bundling up the kids and heading to an organised event, we hope you can choose something to mark the occasion.

Most of our volunteers have a wealth of lived experience as caregivers themselves – and still find the time and energy to support other caregivers in their communities.

💐 One such gem is Andrea, who has volunteered for the past 3-4 years as a Support Group Liaison for Caring Families Aotearoa members in Dunedin. We caught up with Andrea to chat about her heart for this mahi.

Q: What inspired you to start volunteering?
💬 I’d been fostering for a long time before stepping up as a Support Group Liaison – I wanted to give back to support families who might be going through difficult times. With caregiving, it’s important to have people who can listen without judgement and truly understand, because you’ve been there. I wanted to make a positive difference.

Q: What does your role involve?
💬 As a Support Group Liaison, I organise monthly support group meetings, bringing caregivers together to connect in person, share information and feel encouraged. It’s about letting caregiving families know that they don’t have to do it on their own, because we’re there.

Q: What do you gain from volunteering?
💬 A sense of purpose and connection. I love seeing caregivers who are doing amazing work with children and young people feel that they are heard and supported. I’ve learned a lot about myself and I’ve met some really great people.

Q: What would you say to someone who is considering volunteering as a Support Group Liaison?
💬 Don’t be afraid to give it a go. You don’t need to know everything. You just need to care about people and be willing to listen.

💛 Thank you Andrea – and to all our Support Group Liaisons across the motu – for helping to build strong, connected communities of caregivers. We are so lucky to have you with us.

If you receive the Orphan’s Benefit or Unsupported Child’s Benefit, now is a good time to get your application in for the Extraordinary Care Fund.

The current application round will close on 24 July 2026. If you apply for the Fund before the 24th July, you will know the outcome by 16 September.

The Extraordinary Care Fund is administered by Work and Income. It helps to cover extra costs if the child you care for:

• is experiencing difficulties that impact their development, such as learning or behavioural difficulties,

• or shows promise in an ability, skill, or talent, e.g. school, sports, dance, or music.

If you need help with completing the form, please contact us and we can put you in touch with your Regional Coordinator. Phone 0800 693 323.

💐 Keeping the momentum going this National Volunteer Week, with another shout out to our dedicated volunteers, like Sheree!

We asked Sheree about her voluntary mahi – here’s what she told us:

Q: What inspired you to start volunteering?

💬 When I became a Nan raising my baby mokopuna 16 years ago, I joined the local Fostering Kids support group (as it was then, before it became Caring Families Aotearoa). At first it was receiving peer support, then taking advantage of the awesome training programmes. About the time my mokopuna were leaving my day-to-day care, I was asked a couple of times by local caregivers to consider doing the Critical Support role. I said "no" each time as I thought it would trigger some of the heartbreak I had been through in the Family Court. Then one day the Critical Support Manager called to tell me more about the role. She acknowledged my concerns and outlined how I would be supported along the way.

Q: What is your role at Caring Families Aotearoa?

💬 I am a Critical Support Worker, providing one-to-one support for caregivers who have received an allegation about their caregiving of a tamaiti or tamariki in their day to day care. I provide confidential emotional support to these caregivers and advise them of the process and their rights. I make sure their voice is heard and the outcome of the investigation is fair and reasonable.

Q: What do you gain from volunteering?

💬 I get satisfaction from being able to help others, to make the process less stressful, and supporting them to make informed decisions. There can be challenging conversations but it is rewarding when caregivers feel they have been heard and understood.

Q: Any advice for someone who is considering volunteering as a Critical Support Worker?

💬 The role is not for everyone, but the training and support is very good, and you develop your skills and confidence over time. There is a lot of satisfaction from being able to provide support and reassurance to whānau during such a stressful time.

💛 Ngā mihi nui, Sheree – and to all our Regional Committee Members – for making such a positive difference for caregivers.

💐 A huge shout of appreciation to our amazing volunteers this National Volunteer Week!

We couldn’t get by without the wonderful mahi of people like Natalie, who support our organisation with their generous spirit.

Join us for a quick chat with Natalie!

Q: What inspired you to start volunteering?
💬 To help Caring Families Aotearoa to support those on the fostering frontline.

Q: What is your role at Caring Families Aotearoa?
💬 I am a committee member for Wellington Family and Foster Care Association - and a regional committee member for Caring Families Aotearoa.

Q: What do you gain from volunteering?
💬 I love seeing events come to life – planning, then rolling them out. I enjoy being a voice for caregivers who need support by calling on my lived experience to help shape events, gatherings and celebrations. I also have fun making connections with people walking the same journey to support and encourage one another.

Q: Any advice for someone who is considering volunteering as a Regional Committee Member?
💬 It’s incredibly rewarding. Relationships are formed that are life-long. You are helping cogs turn on a planning level, so if you enjoy being a hands-on person, this role is for you!

💛 Ngā mihi nui, Natalie – and to all our volunteers – for all that you do.

Matariki is the Māori name for the cluster of stars that rises in mid-winter in Aotearoa, marking the Māori New Year.

It is a special time to:
✨ remember those who have passed
✨ celebrate what we have, and
✨ look forward to the future.

This year, the theme of Matariki is “Matariki Herenga Waka – For Everyone”. We love this theme as it reinforces that Matariki is a season for all of us – and no matter where you live in this land of the long white cloud, we can all take part in our own way.

As we prepare for the rising of the star cluster and our national holiday, we invite you to learn alongside us about the three guiding principles of Matariki. We hope this will encourage you to think ahead to how you might embrace the spirit of Matariki in a way that feels appropriate for you and your whānau.

This week, our focus is on Remembrance | Matariki Hunga Nui.

These words are so true for caregivers. Embrace the unexpected - the perfectly imperfect situations - and learn from them!

While many tamariki growing up in care respond well to routine and knowing in advance about a planned change in routine, life happens! Having a plan ‘B’ in your back pocket, just in case something doesn’t go the way you originally intended, helps to keep everyone regulated.
