Auckland Cavy Care

Auckland Cavy Care Guinea pig focused rescue based in Auckland, New Zealand. Chairty # CC55874 Auckland Cavy Care is a rescue not a pet shop or breeder.

Every guinea pig that comes here is technically homeless hence why we use the term 'adopt' not 'buy' as we do not breed nor do we sell guinea pigs for profit. We're a 'half-way-home' while the piggies are looking for their forever home. Their first three weeks with us are spent in quarantine, and if needed they get vet treatment. Once they're out of quarantine they get put up for adoption to a loving permanent home where they will be valued and nurtured as part of the family.

We’re so grateful for the recent surprise donation from Friends of Animal Charities.

Their generosity has helped us update the cages on one side in our rescue room so the space is better suited to the animals in our care, easier to clean, and much more practical for the day-to-day work that rescue requires.

We’re still making improvements, and we’re taking time to listen to feedback from our volunteers before making the shelf layout permanent.

At the moment, our setup includes 3 cages on the lower level, each able to house a pair, a middle shelf that can be split into two and is currently home to the mums and bubs, and a top level with a 2x4 setup, with the other side being used for storage.

This is what rescue looks like behind the scenes.
It’s vet bills, desexing, food, bedding, cleaning, housing changes, fostering, and constant adjusting to make sure every piggie gets the care they need. Improvements like this might seem small from the outside, but they make a huge difference to how smoothly we can care for the animals who rely on us every day.

And a big thank you to my partner for putting up with helping with all the changes, because who needs spare time anyway XD

Thank you again to Friends of Animal Charities, and to everyone who supports our rescue work in so many ways. Your kindness helps us keep making practical changes that really matter.

🐹💙 A Heartfelt Thank You! 💙🐰

We are incredibly grateful to Friends of Animal Charities in Paraparaumu for their generous grant of $500 to Auckland Cavy Care Rescue.

As a small volunteer-run rescue, support like this makes a real difference. Every dollar helps us provide food, safe housing, enrichment, and veterinary care for the guinea pigs, rabbits, and other vulnerable animals who come through our doors needing a second chance.

Compassionate support from organisations like Friends of Animal Charities allows us to continue our rescue, rehabilitation, and rehoming work, ensuring animals in need receive the care they deserve.

From all of us, and the animals whose lives will be improved because of your kindness, thank you. We truly appreciate your belief in what we do and your commitment to animal welfare.

💕 Please join us in thanking Friends of Animal Charities for helping make a difference.

Look how lucky these two boys from the Wellington rescue of 40 guinea pigs are. 💚

What an incredibly beautiful homemade cage, and such a loving, thoughtful welcome for them. It’s so moving to see rescued piggies finally land somewhere safe, warm, and so clearly cared for.

We still have 13 guinea pigs from the Wellington rescue group looking for homes, and we are now also looking for indoor foster homes for the young bubs from the recent intake of 28. These little ones need a safe, cosy place to grow until they’re around 4 months old, when they can be de-sexed and prepared for their next step.

Because more than half are boys, many of the babies will eventually be paired into male/female pairs once they’re old enough — so we kindly ask foster homes to please keep in mind that these little ones are temporary visitors while they grow and get ready for their forever homes.

As a registered charity, we rely on donations to keep doing this work, and people can also support us by joining our G-Force members, who are the amazing people who donate regularly to help us care for the guinea pigs who come through our rescue.

If you can help by fostering, please apply here:

Thank you from the bottom of our hearts for helping give these little ones the fresh start they deserve. 🐹

A heartfelt thank you to the two kind people who brought us pellets after our last post 💜💜 Your generosity means so much to us.

Last week we took in 28 guineas, after a situation where a family had a male pair and a female herd, and one male ended up with the females. Sadly, he wasn’t desexed 🤦‍♀️

Desexing is so important — not only for the health and wellbeing benefits, but also to help prevent accidental litters and the stress they can cause for both the animals and their carers.

With so many new little mouths to feed, we’re going through pellets even faster than usual.

The Bunny Bach actually has pellets for sale cheaper than Animates, so if you happen to place an order and wouldn’t mind adding in a bag to donate to us, we would be incredibly grateful 😅💜

We urgently need pellets! 🐰🐹

Pellets are one of the fastest-going essentials in rescue care, and right now we really need your help.

Burgess pellets are our animals’ favourite!

Animates is having a storewide sale — sale ends 28 July.

If you can help, please pick up a bag of Burgess pellets (our animals’ favourite!) through Click & Collect from:
Three Kings
St Lukes
New Lynn
Richmond Road

We currently have just over 50 guineas in rescue and 13 rabbits, including 3 in permanent foster homes due to medical issues, so pellets go quickly.

Every bag makes a difference!
Thank you for supporting rescue.

Our guinea pig adoption page has been updated, and we’d love to help these little ones find truly good lifelong homes. We currently have around 30 guineas ready to adopt, though we still need to take photos of a couple more. We also have some bunnies available, and the 2 white not-so-kittens are still hoping for their perfect people too.

You can find all info on our website at
https://www.aucklandcavycare.org.nz

We want every animal who leaves us to go to a home where they are truly loved and cared for for life. If circumstances ever change, we always take back animals adopted from us, because their wellbeing will always matter to us. And if you’re not sure whether adoption is the right step yet, fostering can be a wonderful way to help first before jumping into adoption.

We honestly couldn’t do this without your support. Every share, enquiry, foster home, donation, and adoption helps us keep going and helps these animals get the future they deserve. 💚

Happy Guinea Pig Appreciation Day!

Today is all about the squeaks, popcorn jumps, and big personalities we love—but it’s also a chance to show up for the guinea pigs who still need us.

We need your help today!
If you’ve ever smiled at a wheek or watched a tiny nose investigate everything, please consider donating right now.

Every donation—big or small—helps cover hay, fresh veggies, bedding, and vet care. These basics add up fast, and the need doesn’t pause.

Donate now: choose an amount that feels doable—every dollar helps.

Make it monthly (if you can): recurring donations are especially powerful because they help us plan ahead for food, supplies, and surprise vet visits.

Leave a note (optional): “Happy Guinea Pig Appreciation Day.”

Share this post to rally friends—one share can bring in the next lifesaving gift.

Quick reminder: monthly (recurring) gifts are a game-changer— they help us budget for hay, fresh veggies, bedding, and vet care before emergencies hit.

Special thanks to Gforce members!
Gforce members, you’re a core part of this community.
Thank you for showing up, pitching in, and helping keep our guinea pigs safe, healthy, and loved—today and all year long.

From all of us (and every tiny nose in the rescue): happy appreciation day.

Please donate, share, and support the rescue—your help is what turns squeaks and cuddles into full bowls, clean bedding, and lifesaving care.

(If you've read this far down - this picture is a sneak peak of our 2027 calendar - which each g-force member gets!)

We’re always on the lookout for a reliable ongoing supply of veggies for the guineas 🥕🥬

If you know of any veggie shops, grocers, markets, or local businesses that may be willing to help, please let us know — we’d be so incredibly grateful for any connections.

We’re very happy to take unsellable veggies, surplus produce, and fresh veg that would otherwise go to waste. Nothing goes to waste when it comes to feeding hungry cavies, and every donation makes a real difference.

Guineas need fresh vegetables every day, and we do our best to offer a good mix of safe, Vitamin C–rich options like leafy green lettuce, puha, parsley, broccoli, kale, Asian greens, capsicum, spinach, and mint. We’re also always grateful for any other suitable fresh greens or herbs that can help add variety to their daily meals.

For a rescue group, that adds up quickly — usually around a cup of mixed veg per guinea pig per day.

An ongoing, reliable supply would make such a huge difference and help us keep our cavies happy, healthy, and well fed.

Thank you so much for thinking of the pigs and supporting the rescue 💚

These two handsome boys are still looking for their indoor homes 💛

Rutabega and Gerkin were born around the end of January, came in at 3 weeks old and are now nearly 5 months old. Their five siblings and mum have all found new homes, but these two are still waiting for their perfect match.

Rutabega has lovely fluffy medium-length fur and is a shy little boy, while Gerkin has short fur, brightest blue eyes and is a confident checky boy. Both boys are desexed, microchipped, and vaccinated, and they're ready to find a safe indoor home of their own.

If you think you can offer Rutabega and Gerkin their forever home, please fill out our adoption application form at https://www.aucklandcavycare.org.nz/cat-adoption-form/

WOW! Thank you, everyone! 🎉🐹

You all managed to raise $10,019.95 for our donation match programme - which means the full $10,000 match has been unlocked!

That's over $20,000 going towards our new fence for the rescued cavies. We are absolutely blown away and deeply humbled by your generosity and support.

Over the last 3 days, we've seen 4 roaming dogs on our local streets and had an off-leash dog run down off the hill and onto the front of our property, growling at us with its hackles up. This fence really helps us keep the animals in the rescue safe - and your support made it possible.

Every single donation - big or small - made this possible. Thank you to everyone who shopped, donated, and shared our mission. You've given our guinea pigs a safer, better space to thrive while they wait for their forever homes.

This is what community care looks like. We are so humbled to have supporters like you who believe in what we do at Auckland Cavy Care. 💚

With so much gratitude,
Auckland Cavy Care Family
