TYLA Youth Development Trust

TYLA Youth Development Trust TYLA stands for TURN YOUR LIFE AROUND. We are a New Zealand charity supporting At-risk rangatahi

Our ambition is to identify at-risk youth, who are on a pathway to crime, and to intervene before their wayward journeys take them too far.

Meet Dafydd Sanders (David Eagle), a former New Zealand taekwondo representative, co-leads Eagle DS Combat and Wellness with his wife Carrie in South Auckland, delivering youth development and holistic wellbeing programmes. Built on lived experience and guided by Te Whare Tapa Whā, their kaupapa supports rangatahi and whānau through safe and structured martial arts programmes.

TYLA Youth Development Trust is excited about this initiative and the meaningful opportunities it could open up for our rangatahi, supporting their growth, wellbeing, and future pathways through positive, culturally grounded experiences.

Expose Rangatahi to positive environments and the results 🌱
When young people are surrounded by support, opportunity, and belief, they rise to it. Safe spaces, strong role models, and environments that celebrate their identity don’t just shape behaviour — they shape futures. Invest in the spaces our Rangatahi grow in, and you’ll see confidence, leadership, and potential flourish.

Change the environment. Empower the Rangatahi. Watch what happens. ✨
Positive spaces create positive futures

This week we celebrated Uike Kātoanga’i ‘o e Lea Faka-Tonga (Tongan Language Week) with a special Tongan lunch! 🇹🇴 Our amazing youth helped prepare Lu sipi, taro & green banana, and some refreshing mango ‘otai. We had the privilege of Christian and Tino from Sport Waitākere helping with the prep. Sharing cultures like this is so important for our young people – it builds connection, pride, and understanding. Mālō ‘aupito to everyone who joined us in keeping the Tongan language and traditions alive! 🌺

Thank you Auckland Foundation for your continued support of TYLA and our rangatahi. We are honoured to be part of this video series and grateful for the opportunity to share the impact of your generosity in our community.

Together, we can continue to inspire hope and positive futures for our young people across Tāmaki Makaurau.

🌺 Cook Islands Language Week 🇨🇰
As part of this year’s theme, we brought our Cooking on a Budget session to life by preparing Chops Soy — a delicious staple loved in the Cook Islands and across the Pacific 🥘🌊
Cooking good food doesn’t have to break the bank!

Furthermore, there’s something special about teaching the next generation the sound of our islands.
Today, we shared the joy of the ukarere — one chord at a time 🌺🎵 Teaching our young ones the ukarere isn’t just about music — it’s about keeping our culture alive 🌊🇨🇰

Every note is a connection to our roots, our people, and our stories.
