It's also high in fibre, which is great for gut health and can help keep you feeling fuller for longer. 🩵 Enjoy a bowl on its own as a nourishing snack, or with a slice of grainy toast for a satisfying meal.

Remember to use salt-reduced stock to help keep sodium levels in check.

📌Save this recipe for your next cosy lunch or dinner and let us know if you give it a try!

Vegetable & lentil soup
1 ½ cups split red lentils
2 Tbsp olive oil
1 leek, roughly chopped (you could also use onion here)
2 carrots, peeled & roughly chopped
2 stalks of celery, roughly chopped
400g pumpkin, peeled and roughly chopped
1 tsp ground cumin
1 tsp ground coriander
1 tsp smoked paprika
pinch of chilli flakes, optional
6 cups (1.5 litres) reduced-salt vegetable stock

Method
Rinse the lentils thoroughly in a sieve until the water runs clear.
Heat the olive oil in a large saucepan over a moderate heat. Add the leek (or onion), carrot and celery. Sauté until softened (about 5-8 minutes).
Add the pumpkin and spices and mingle with the other vegetables for 1-2 more minutes.
Add the lentils and stock and bring to the boil. Reduce the heat & simmer for 35-40 minutes until the lentils and vegetables are soft.
Remove the soup from the heat and puree with a stick blender.

National Volunteer Week 14-20 June💙

This National Volunteer Week we want to extend our heartfelt thanks to the incredible volunteers who generously give their time, care and talent to support our clients.

A special shout-out goes to our wonderful knitters, including Jeanette and Joan, who create beautiful woollen garments, blankets and rugs for the people we care for. These handmade items provide more than just warmth. They offer comfort, kindness and a reminder that someone is thinking of them.

Many people receiving dialysis feel the cold while they are on treatment, as their blood circulates through the dialysis machine. During the winter months especially, these lovingly crafted rugs and blankets are greatly appreciated and bring real comfort to our clients.

We are also excited to have recently started attaching special tags to each rug, helping recipients know a little more about the care behind every handmade creation.

To Jeanette, Joan and all our volunteers, thank you for the difference you make every day. 💙

Made with simple ingredients and fragrant spices, this hearty plant-based meal is both satisfying and mindful of kidney health. 💚 Whether you're cooking for yourself or sharing with whānau and friends, this easy recipe is sure to become a winter favourite.

🥄 Kidney-Friendly Dahl (Serves 6)
⭐ Ingredients:
1 large onion, chopped
4 cloves garlic, chopped
1 Tbsp canola oil
½ tsp ginger powder
½ tsp chilli flakes
2 tsp garam masala
2 tsp turmeric
½ tsp cinnamon
2 tsp salt
1 tsp pepper
1 can no-added-salt tomatoes
1 can lite coconut cream
3 cups water
2 cups dried yellow split peas
1 bunch spinach (or 4 large silverbeet leaves)

👩‍🍳 Method:
1️⃣ Cook onion in oil for 5 minutes until soft.
2️⃣ Add spices and seasonings, stirring for 1 minute.
3️⃣ Add tomatoes, coconut cream, and water. Mix well.
4️⃣ Stir in yellow split peas.
5️⃣ Cover and simmer for 80 minutes, stirring occasionally so it doesn't stick to the pan.

Serve with steamed brown basmati rice, yoghurt, and fresh coriander.

💡 Time-saving tip: Soak the yellow split peas in water for 2 hours or overnight before cooking to reduce cooking time.

💙 Giving back can change lives.

After donating a kidney, Kurt gained a much deeper understanding of the realities of kidney disease and the challenges many families face every day.

Wanting to look after his own health and continue making a difference, Kurt has set himself a new goal: completing the Auckland Half Marathon on 1st November 2026 🏃‍♂️

Along the way, he’s also raising funds and awareness for The Kidney Society, helping support people living with kidney disease across Aotearoa.

We’re incredibly grateful for Kurt’s generosity, compassion, and commitment to giving back - one step at a time. 🌿

💙 Your kidneys do an important job every single day, filtering waste and keeping your body balanced. Chronic Kidney Disease (CKD) happens when these tiny filters become damaged over time and can’t work as well as they should.

In New Zealand, diabetes and high blood pressure are two of the biggest causes of CKD. The hard part is that kidney disease often develops slowly, and many people may not notice symptoms until significant damage has already happened.

Around 1 in 10 adults has some level of kidney damage. If left unmanaged, CKD can lead to kidney failure, heart disease, and stroke.

The good news? 🌿 Early detection, regular check-ups, good medical care, and healthy lifestyle choices can make a real difference in slowing the progression of CKD.

If you have questions about your kidneys or chronic kidney disease, give us a call on 0800 235 711 or use our online booking form to book a free Kidney Kōrero with one of our lovely Health Educators today https://bit.ly/4faajPn . 💙

Continuing with our Foodie Friday Portions Series, we're sharing a simple way to understand portion sizes, using something you always have with you: your hand!

Knowing the right portion size for you can help you enjoy a balanced diet and supports your kidneys and overall health.

Two cupped hands = non-starchy vegetables
One fist = grains, starchy vegetables, or legumes/ lentils
Whole hand = fish
Palm of your hand = poultry, meat or meat alternative, e.g. tofu
Palm of your hand (cupped) = a snack portion of fruit, vegetables, or unsalted nuts

For people living with kidney disease, portion sizes are especially important. They can help you balance your nutrient intake and avoid consuming too much sodium, phosphorus, or protein, depending on your individual dietary needs.

What are some of your favourite ways to fill your plate? Share your ideas in the comments!

Winter can be tough on our wellbeing, especially for people living with kidney disease. Colder weather, less movement, and drinking fewer fluids can all affect bowel health and leave us feeling uncomfortable.

Small daily habits can make a big difference 💙

Here are a few simple ways to support your wellbeing this winter:
❄️ Sip fluids regularly throughout the day within your recommended fluid allowance
❄️ Start the morning with a warm breakfast like porridge
❄️ Keep moving with a short daily walk, even indoors at your local mall
❄️ Include fibre-rich plant foods in your meals to support healthy bowel motions
❄️ Listen to your body and allow time to go to the toilet when needed

Using the Healthy Plate Model can also help:
🥦 ½ vegetables
🍗 ¼ protein foods
🍞 ¼ grains or starchy foods

Constipation and diarrhoea are common with kidney disease, but ongoing symptoms, severe pain, blood in bowel motions, or signs of dehydration should always be discussed with your renal team or healthcare provider.

Looking after your gut health is an important part of looking after your overall wellbeing this winter.
