“I’d spent 15 years viewing children’s behaviour through a medical model of deficit and had completely overlooked the wider picture…”

A fascinating reflection on children’s behaviour from an NHS paediatrician turned primary teacher.

Jess Morgan says that “challenging behaviour” was seen as a problem to fix. But moving from fixing to listening can be transformative for families. She suggests the following useful phrases to explore children’s behaviour with curiosity:

What does a standard morning look like before school?
Which parts of the school day do you find the hardest?
What or who helps you feel calm?

School can be incredibly distressing for some children, and Morgan urges others to not view school engagement against their personal ease experienced in their own education.

How would you approach a child with this behaviour in your classroom?

👦 Charlie is in year 6...
He makes jokes and tries to make classmates laugh during lessons. He doesn’t follow instructions, especially when it gains peer attention. He finds it difficult to stop a behaviour once peers respond positively. He makes exaggerated noises at inappropriate times, seeking reactions from classmates and adults.

Inclusion bases 🤝 nurture groups

Having observed your pupils' needs and behaviours, you may now be planning your targeted support for after half term. The DfE recommends inclusion bases, but what are they?

What is an inclusion base? A small group provision in a dedicated space delivering specific interventions, teaching, or support.

Who are they for? For pupils with additional needs without the need for formal diagnosis, including pupils with SEND or those needing behavioural or pastoral support.

Last week we attended the Tes SEND Show UK and delivered a workshop on Developing effective relational practice in mainstream settings 💫

Here's what Miranda Collins, who led the workshop, had to say about the event 💬

"Usually, when I go to London, I feel like a country mouse overwhelmed by the bustle of the big city... this time felt different. I was proud to be representing nurtureuk at the TES SEND Show, so I strode purposefully towards the venue.

Walking into the venue was both inspiring and overwhelming. So many people had come together with a deep passion for improving the lives of children and young people with SEND. It is always a pleasure to wander the aisles, connect with stallholders and pause at places of interest. Many were keen to hear about nurtureuk’s work and intrigued to learn how long we have been supporting schools. Others already knew us and spoke warmly about the difference our work makes.

Relational practice is very much a phrase of the moment, and I was pleased to explore it with delegates during an interactive afternoon workshop. Beginning, as ever, with a relational approach, I was curious to hear what delegates had enjoyed during their time at the show. The interactive AI pets were a particular hit!

As we explored the workshop content, rich conversations soon overtook the slides. Delegates were reassured to hear that relational practice is rooted in the small moments of connection that take place throughout the school day – for children, young people and adults alike. They were also pleased to learn that neuroscience supports this approach and can help bring colleagues on board, building consistency and, ultimately, a greater sense of safety and wellbeing.

Together, we recognised that when learners feel safe and supported by strong relationships, the sky really can be the limit. 💫
