Nurtureuk Dedicated to improving the social, emotional, mental health & wellbeing of children & young people.

Pupils facing social, emotional and mental health (SEMH) challenges can be withdrawn and isolated, suffering in silence, others display hugely challenging and disruptive behaviour that significantly affects those around them. All are in desperate need of nurture - a different approach to learning that prioritises relationships and wellbeing. Research has shown that a nurturing approach to educatio

n works for all pupils, helping every child to learn. Nurture gets to the heart of a child’s challenges and supports children and young people to build connections and resilience. It is a highly effective way of supporting improved behaviour and increased attendance in schools, leading to better attainment and reduced exclusions. nurtureuk is the national charity dedicated to using nurturing approaches to improve children and young people’s life chances. We give education professionals the proven tools, training and support they need to implement nurture in schools and remove barriers to learning. We also work with policy makers to make nurture a cornerstone of education in the UK.

Congratulations to Glenlee Primary School on the reaccreditation of their National Nurturing School Award 🎉

Glenlee Primary, in Scotland, first achieved the award in 2022 and we're so glad to see the continued commitment of staff to fully embed nurture across the whole school. The positive impact on their pupils, staff and parents is incredible to see!

Did you know that you can apply the Six Principles of Nurture to adults too?

🌟 The school environment offers a safe base

Leaders create a "safe base" by being visible, approachable, and consistent. When staff know that mistakes are treated as learning opportunities rather than failures, they feel safe to innovate.

➡ Practical example for your school: The workload operational filter
Before any new policy or initiative is introduced, senior leadership subjects it to a transparent workload impact assessment (e.g., if a new marking strategy is introduced, an old administrative requirement is dropped).

Belonging is not a need that we outgrow 🌱

Will pupils skipping the lunch queue improve their attendance? 🍎

A Department for Education press release on attendance support was released today. It takes aim at the ‘just one day off’ habits that impact school attendance, such as birthdays. Children are up to 55% more likely to miss school on their birthday, they say.

In order to tackle these absences, schools will receive toolkits and guidance with recommendations for simple initiatives. These include a queue-jump on your birthday and “Under the Weather” forms to help agree in advance how to support children in school on a bad day.

What do you think of this new guidance? Is it right to be focusing on these one-off absences? We'd love to hear your thoughts...

Where are you at in your nurture journey?

Are your pupils taught to recognise emotions and name them? Are safety nets in place for transitions? Whether you’re just starting out on your path or well on your way, try out our Nurture School Checklist for a quick temperature gauge 🌡️

This checklist is designed to be interactive; to get you to slow down and reflect on the questions. We recommend printing it off and completing it with a colleague or two, with a pen at the ready 😀
