It was a very emotional day for the 83rd anniversary Memorial Service for the Bethnal Green tube shelter disaster on 8th March. The church was pretty full with many of the victims’ relatives that were regular attendees and one survivor. Several were able to read out sections of the victims’ names that contained their loved ones. While the names were read out 173 candles were lit on the altar. The names of many of the survivors, that had died since the last service, were also honoured which made it even more poignant to remember the huge contribution they had all made to the charity Memorial project.
It was lovely to see the local fire fighters there to form a guard of honour along with representatives from the local police who also laid flowers in memory of those who had helped as rescuers at the time of the disaster. Revd Chris Morgan organised a beautiful service that was appreciated by us all and was accompanies by Leon Silver, Cllr Sirajul Islam and Paul Kaufman to give fully inclusive prayers and blessings.
After the Service many paraded across the road, with local MP Rushanara Ali and several pearly Kings & Queens, to lay flowers and wreaths on the Memorial in Bethnal Green Gardens. A minute’s silence was held there, with a further blessing and prayers. The Stairway to Heaven Memorial Trust committee members, plus the church family and many of those present at the Memorial Service, brought along biscuits, cakes and beigels to share afterwards while everyone had the chance to chat and catch up. It was an amazing and comforting service, and we thank everyone involved in making it happen, especially Revd Morgan.
