Alifosina Mkonde is what we at MicroLoan Foundation call a ‘super entrepreneur.’ But things haven’t always been this way.

With eight children to support, Alifosina and her husband struggled to afford school fees and enough food to keep their family from going hungry.

Things started to change in 2012, when Alifosina joined MicroLoan Foundation. She invested her first £13 / $17 / A$25 loan in her tomato stall, and as her profits grew, she expanded her grocery business, selling rice, groundnuts and maize alongside her tomatoes.

Using each loan to grow her business and profits over time, by 2018, Alifosina had built her own maize mill!

By 2022, the mill had eight employees and had become a centre for local economic activity.

All her children completed school, with three going to university, and one of her sons now helps her run the mill.

Alifosina is a role model for her community and a great example of our microfinance model in action.

We provide women with the tools to start their own businesses, but it’s their own perseverance that helps them succeed.

For years, Fortunate worked as a hairdresser, travelling to clients’ homes before finally opening her own salon in Bosha, Zimbabwe. Building a business from scratch wasn’t easy, and when drought hit her community in 2024, many customers had less money to spend, making an already challenging journey even harder.

But Fortunate kept going.

She invested her loans in more stock for her growing business, including braids, weaves and hair products. And now her weekly profits have doubled, helping her provide for her family, pay school fees, buy household essentials and create a more secure future.

Gaining access to finance is vital, but financial literacy is what enables our entrepreneurs to make informed decisions, manage cash flow and build sustainable businesses.

That's why every woman who joins MicroLoan Foundation receives practical training in budgeting, saving, pricing and business management before receiving a loan, with ongoing training every month after that.

Delivered through role-play, song and visual learning, our training is designed to be accessible, memorable and life-changing.

One of clients named Edwick says: “The budget sessions have been particularly helpful. They help me keep track of my income, expenses and see if I’m making a profit.”

Last week, our Director of Fundraising, Malin Rosenkvist, attended London Climate Action Week where she participated in a session exploring the critical link between gender, climate finance and the funding gap.

One question stood out: Is perceived risk preventing climate finance from reaching women?

Despite growing evidence that investing in women delivers strong social and economic returns, only a small proportion of climate finance reaches gender-responsive initiatives.

For organisations like MicroLoan Foundation, this conversation is especially relevant. Across southern Africa, we see first-hand how climate change disproportionately affects women living in poverty. Yet when women have access to finance, business training and ongoing support, they are better equipped to adapt, diversify their incomes and build resilience for their families and communities.
Another important theme was the need to bridge the gap between grassroots organisations and funders by building a shared language around investment, impact and long-term change. Stronger partnerships and greater understanding will be essential if we're to unlock funding at the scale needed.

As well as being an environmental challenge, climate change exposes and amplifies existing inequalities. Investing in women is one of the most effective ways to strengthen resilience and create lasting change.
