Remarkable speech by new Prime Minister Andy Burnham this morning on social care. Excellent to hear someone at the very top of Government speak from the heart about his personal experience. There was such awareness of the realities of care and honesty about the barriers. But, crucially, starting with the value of social care as something 'so fundamental to life'.

The Prime Minister pledged his personal commitment to 'face up to this'. He said it will be 'a test of myself to bring forward a solution, for my dad and the millions like him'.

Cross-party talks on reform of social care are starting today. This is a once-in-a-generation opportunity to improve the lives of hundreds of thousands of people and their families. Time for politicians to work together to create a better care system for us all.

We're in The i Paper today. The article highlights the problem of people being forced to move from their care home when their council take over paying for their care. This is something we're hearing about more and more on our adviceline.

Andy Burnham has given his first speech as Labour leader, putting social care front and centre:
“Let’s have the courage to fix the big things that politics has neglected, like social care"

This is very welcome, and we look forward to seeing this translated into action. For the older people we support, change cannot come soon enough.

It is also excellent to see another political leader with personal, lived experience of social care.

Two bits of care news today for England.

One is a report showing the variations in care depending on where people live. More than 1 in 3 councils assessed by the regulator were rated 'requires improvement'. Concerns included weaknesses in protecting people at serious risk (safeguarding), long waits and support for unpaid carers.

The second is a new government Unpaid Carers Action Plan. The aim is to help unpaid carers be "recognised earlier, connected to support services more easily, and better supported in their health, education and employment". A welcome move. Especially as many of the people we support on our adviceline don't recognise themselves as 'carers'.
