How do you achieve new legislation through campaigning? Hear from Alison Leitch from Care Home Relatives Scotland at our panel event on 21 October about the group’s tireless determination to introduce Anne’s Law. This strengthens the rights of people living in care homes to spend time with the people who are important to them.

The legislation is known as Anne’s Law in memory of Anne Duke, who was a care home resident in 2020 and whose daughter initially launched a petition for family carers to be able to enter a care home and continue to provide care to their loved ones, even during an outbreak situation.

The law came into force in Scotland earlier this year and includes a legal presumption that suspending visits from an Essential Care Supporter is likely to cause serious harm to a care home resident’s health and wellbeing.

Did you know that today is the International Day of Older People? It’s a chance to reflect on the opportunities and challenges of ageing populations. This year it falls in a week where there’s been a big focus on the future of social care and what we want this to look like.

We hear from people about how care is falling short of what they expected or hoped for. But we also know from our work that good care enables people to thrive.

We recently supported someone whose parent changed care homes, from an environment where they were unhappy, to one where they are now enjoying life again and their wishes and preferences are being met.

As we discuss and plan the future of social care, we should be working towards ensuring that everyone in need of care receives the best possible quality of life and has their rights respected. It’s often not about cost, but about listening, learning and adapting so people feel heard, included and supported.

Using a public inquiry to push for improved care and protection of rights. Hear about Professor Naomi Fulop’s experiences at our panel event on 21 October.

Naomi is a board member of Covid-19 Bereaved Families for Justice UK (CBFJ). Covid-19 Bereaved Families for Justice UK campaigned for the Covid-19 public inquiry and is committed to ensuring that lessons are learned for future pandemics.

Naomi is involved in regular meetings with the Cabinet Office and the Department of Health and Social Care in relation to the Government’s response to and implementation of the recommendations of the public inquiry.

It was heartening today to see the Prime Minister use his speech at the Labour Party conference to talk about social care. Andy Burnham committed to introducing a National Care Service, free at the point of need.

We welcome the priority being given to social care reform, and the passion from the Prime Minister on this issue. We're disheartened that the immediate media focus has been on funding rather than on developing a common understanding of what good care should look like.

As the discussions about the future of care continue, we’ll be working hard to ensure the experiences and voices of older people in need of care are heard.

We’re delighted to hear Andy Burnham once again committing to reforming social care. Speaking on the BBC on Sunday he outlined a plan for a National Care Service that would be free at the point of use for everyone in England. We’ll be listening for more details at his conference speech on Tuesday.

Our adviceline hears that people are not getting the support they need right now and this has to change. We’ll keep speaking up about how social care has the power to transform people’s lives by supporting older people to live with dignity.

The PM says the proposed care service, which would be "free at the point of use", would be put on the ballot at the next general election.

Healthwatch England want to find out about people’s hospital discharge experiences. We hear from people who are discharged into temporary care home placements with little care planning, meaning that they don’t get the right care and support when they’re discharged. We also hear from people who are placed far away from family and friends becoming cut off from their support at a time when they really need them close.
