St Joseph's Hospice helps people in East London to live life to the fullest, to the very end. 💙

We have been enhancing lives, easing pain and bringing comfort and understanding for over a hundred years. Nothing can soften the blow of learning that you have been diagnosed with an illness which cannot be cured and will bring an end to your life. But at St Joseph’s Hospice we help our patients and those closest to them, to cope with the anxiety and challenges which may arise. St Joseph’s broad range of services enriches the lives of patients and their families from the diverse communities of east and north-east London. St Joseph’s is available to all those who can benefit from it; we work to meet all the needs of our patients, including those which reflect their ethnic, cultural or religious heritage. The care and treatment available at St Joseph’s helps patients live as actively as possible for as long as possible. It also supports the whole person, offering practical, emotional and spiritual help in addition to the medical care. The Day Hospice, social work team, chaplaincy, bereavement and children’s bereavement services all work to meet the needs of those with cancer and other life limiting illnesses as well as those of their families and carers. Most people with a serious illness prefer to remain at home if they can. Our Community Palliative Care Team works alongside other professionals, so that wherever possible, people needing palliative care can be cared for in their own homes.

It's Hospice Care Week! (5th-11th October)

This year’s theme, ‘Don’t leave hospice care to chance’, highlights the incredible work hospices across the UK do every day, while calling for sustainable funding to ensure everyone can access the care and support they need when they need it 🧡

At St Joseph’s Hospice, we believe everyone deserves access to high quality hospice care, whoever they are and wherever they live 🏠

Throughout the week we’ll be sharing stories and resources across our socials, celebrating the invaluable difference that hospice care makes to patients and their families. Follow along throughout the week to learn more.

Less than one week to go until our next Death Café 😊☕

Our Death Café at St Joseph’s Hospice offers a friendly, informal space to talk about dying and loss, whatever feels right for you. Our next event takes place during Hospice Care Week, and we’ll be gathering in our beautiful garden room at the Hospice with plenty of tea and delicious cakes too 🌿

Our Dementia Wellbeing East London (DWEL) team attended the International Namaste Care Conference on World Alzheimer’s Day last week, joining healthcare professionals and dementia care experts from more than 14 countries 🗺️

They were honoured to meet Professor Joyce Simard, founder of Namaste Care and a leading dementia care specialist, pictured here. Our DWEL Manager Rach shared:

“It was the first time we have been able to attend in person and it was such an incredibly positive and inspiring day. Highlights included a talk by Professor David Sheard about the vital importance of authenticity and emotional intelligence as a staff group as we come to terms with the reality of using AI and an increasingly digitalized world. Also Beverly Wilson sharing her incredible story of using doodles to connect with her mother, and how these developed into incredible intergenerational art pieces about joy and hope.

We are very excited to share new learning with our volunteers and colleagues as we continue to practice kindness, connection and love in the spirit of the Namaste programme with our patients and families." 🤝💙

Last week, we came together to celebrate the launch of our Hospice Strategy 2026-2031 💙

It was wonderful to welcome so many people from across our community to St Joseph’s.

From supporters and local leaders to corporate partners and healthcare colleagues, the evening was a chance to share our ambitions for the future, have some really valuable conversations and talk about how we can work together to reach more people who need our support.
