Last week, and stood up in the House of Commons to question Ministers on the Government’s plans to support community energy projects through new legislation.

For over a year now the Government has been making promises and it’s time for them to follow through.

If they want to change the energy system, they need to change the law.

Will we see changes to enable the local buying and selling of community energy in the Government’s upcoming Energy Independence Bill?

Thank you Baroness Young for putting this crucial question to Government Ministers during the King’s speech debates in the House of Lords.

We are watching closely for the next steps.

The King’s Speech at the State Opening of Parliament on 13th May marked the start of a new parliamentary session and an opportunity for the Government to outline upcoming legislation that will be introduced into Parliament.

We welcome the announcement of an Energy Independence Bill and the Government’s emphasis on delivering more homegrown renewable energy.

This is a promising opportunity for the Government to act on its public commitment, made in July 2025 and several times since, to unlock the growth of community-led energy projects.
