Good news just in - this morning, the Government announced an immediate £30 million funding for community energy projects.

This is the first step towards implementing the Local Power Plan, which promised up to £1 billion to support new projects and regulatory reform.

Community energy groups are up against many obstacles. Funding is only one of them.

Outdated market rules are blocking the growth of renewable energy.

A big injection of funding doesn’t get rid of the regulatory hurdles. The Government needs to change the law to make it easier for communities to sell power locally.

Thank you to Wera Hobhouse for putting a timely question to the prime minister last Wednesday.

Last week, Andy Burnham did his first ever Prime Minister’s Questions. Wera Hobhouse MP asked a question about community energy. But the prime minister simply referenced the Government’s Local Power Plan - which was published over 200 days ago.

Some communities are already generating their own power. But they are still up against outdated market rules, making it impossible for community energy schemes to sell their power locally.

To enable households and smaller businesses to buy clean energy directly from a local community-run provider, the Government could include reforms in the upcoming Energy Independence Bill.

Miatta Fahnbulleh has endorsed a “cleaner, more resilient, and community-centred energy future”. But will she use her new position as the Secretary of State for Energy Security and Net Zero to make this vision a reality?

New legislation is coming soon from her department. The Energy Independence Bill is expected in mid-September.

The time is ripe for Fahnbulleh to walk the talk. The new Bill should enable community energy groups to sell the power they generate directly to local people.

Last week, and stood up in the House of Commons to question Ministers on the Government’s plans to support community energy projects through new legislation.

For over a year now the Government has been making promises and it’s time for them to follow through.

If they want to change the energy system, they need to change the law.

Extreme heat is a consequence of burning fossil fuels.

We need urgent, systemic change to the energy system as we know it.

The government must move faster on climate crisis intervention. That includes a clean, green transition to 100% renewable energy, with people generating power at the local level.
