Global Media Campaign to End FGM

Global Media Campaign to End FGM The Global Media Campaign aims to empower End FGM activists around the world by using different forms of media to amplify their voices.

We are a non-profit organization currently repurposing our media networks to Stop The Spread of COVID19 Global Media Campaign to end female ge***al mutilation began in the UK at the beginning of 2014. Working with other British campaign groups and international campaign platform Change.org, the Guardian and young female activist, Fahma Mohamed called on Minister for Education, Michael Gove to writ

e to all schools in the UK asking head teachers to take whatever action necessary to protect the children in their schools against FGM. The UN Secretary General Ban Ki Moon then joined our media campaign, calling on media around the world to support an international drive to end the practice. A month later, not only had Mr Gove agreed to write to all schools, but the Welsh and Scottish Education ministers agreed to do the same. Our media campaign then spread to the US where, inspired by what she had seen in Britain, a young woman from Atlanta called Jaha Dukereh started her own petition with Change.org, Equality Now and the Guardian. She called on President Obama to order a national survey into the prevalence of FGM in the US, who did so and also spoke out on the practice as a result. We have engaged in grassroots work in Kenya, the Gambia, Nigeria and Sierra Leone. In October 2015, we ran our first media Campaign Academy with the Guardian, giving training to a diverse group of Kenyan activists on how to use different forms of social media to amplify their message and have a greater impact. Over three years we have been working in collaboration with Jaha and Accidental Pictures to tell her story of overcoming FGM and going back to Gambia to help bring an end to the practice. The film, Jaha's Promise, had it's world premiere in Copenhagen on 16th March, which was attended by Crown Princess Mary of Denmark. The UK premiere will be on Saturday 10th June at Sheffield Docs Festival. Like our page to keep up to date with the latest news, blogs and photos from the campaign.

Eradicating this killer of women (44,000 a year) cannot be left in these traumatic times just to governments, NGOs or campaigners struggling with devastated gender budgets.

We have the answers: frontliners know what to do know what to do (Caravans, local media campaigns) and it can cost as little 0.45 cents to change minds and protect a girl.

Let this be your action for International Women's Day. Join the FGM Is Everyone's Business initiative and eradicate FGM.

On this day we are inviting the first wave of business supporters to join the FGM Is Everyone’s Business movement ahead of its global launch coming soon.

Sign up to take part and if you work with ESG or corporate responsibility leaders, please introduce them to the initiative and encourage them to join the movement.

Because ending FGM will take all of us.

📢 We're thrilled to announce the upcoming release of our Impact Report on the EU-funded Born Perfect Women’s Caravan, implemented by the Global Media Campaign (GMC), with the National Committee Against Harmful Practices (CNAPN).

The impact survey conducted in Sonaco and Mafanco in November 2024 provides valuable data on the effectiveness of the initiative to address FGM in Guinea-Bissau. The main focus of the survey was in the Gabu region where researchers carried out interviews with 900 people.

In Sonaco, 94% of respondents who engaged with the Caravan (either through participation or awareness) reported a shift in their views on FGM. Key drivers of this change included the Caravan's film, musicians, and radio coverage, with women demonstrating stronger recognition of FGM’s harmful effects compared to men.

Overall, the findings demonstrate that the Caravan, community dialogues, and media campaigns have had a measurable impact on shifting attitudes towards FGM. The data supports the continued prioritization of media and community-based interventions in future strategies.

You can help ! Frontline women's FGM caravans also begin running in Kenya in 2025 again backed by the EU and UNFPA. Frontliners are seeking new FGM donors to back them in 2025 in West Africa.

📢 is preparing to launch a cross-border caravan in the Mali-Mauritania region in Summer 2025.

Building on our extensive experience in Mali, where we've implemented over 200 local media campaigns with grassroots women's organizations since 2018.

This initiative will focus on engaging localized networks of and movement building, leveraging media to promote the abandonment of FGM.

Parents are actively participating in the judicial process.
• Circumcisors are also being held accountable
• A pressing challenge remains: FGM (Female Ge***al Mutilation) still persists, as evidenced by a recent incident in Korelach.

It's essential we continue to advocate and take action. How do you think communities can better collaborate to address and prevent these occurrences? Share your thoughts and experiences below. 💬

As we approach December, we're working tirelessly, yet there's a significant disparity between the support needed and what is currently available. To truly make a difference, it's crucial to amplify our efforts and ensure no girl is left vulnerable.

• Current Reality: We're at only 20-30% support when 100% is needed.
• Visible Challenge: Girls are still being mutilated daily despite awareness.
• Activist's Limitation: Can't confront or arrest; can only share information.
• Action Plan: Increase advocacy, community involvement, and resource allocation.

Together, we can turn information into action. Let's build stronger support systems and create safer environments for all girls. How can we collaborate to close this support gap and protect our future generations? Share your ideas and experiences below!

At least 17,500 girls are at risk of FGM this December holidays in Kenya, Tanzania and Mali- a time when they are traditonally mutilated - so the long school holidays can allow them to hear.

Below, see girls being led for their FGM ceremony through Kehancha, Kuria, Kenya on Friday 22 November 2024.

Police and frontline activists are out now rescuing girls from FGM but lack even petrol for the police cars to reach the villages where the mutilations are taking place. Help keep girls safe in guarded shelters until the danger is past.

The Global Media Campaign is urgently funding petrol, supplies and safe houses for rescued girls..

Right now in Tanzania’s Mara region, as communities gear up for the December holiday cutting season. Over 1,500 girls across seven clans face the threat of female ge***al mutilation (FGM) in a few weeks.
Thousands more are at risk in Kenya and parts of West Africa.

GMC are working with frontline activists in the border town of Tarime, right at the epicentre of the cutting, who are rescuing girls who are on the run and keeping them safe in the shelters for 40 days until the "cutting season"is over.
