A warm welcome can change everything.

We’re looking to form volunteer groups across the UK to help welcome families and individuals who worked for or supported the British government in Afghanistan, and who were no longer able to safely remain there. They are now resettling in communities around the country.

Each group needs a minimum of six people with the right to live in the UK. Groups also need to be willing to have—or open—a separate bank account to manage the project.

There is no fundraising required: funds for essential items will be provided.
No expertise is needed—just compassion, reliability, and a bit of time. There’s no single way to help, and no pressure to do more than you can. Even small acts of kindness make a big difference.

Volunteering is also an opportunity to meet new people, build lasting friendships, learn new skills, and feel the real satisfaction of making a meaningful difference in someone’s life.

If this speaks to you, we’d love to hear from you 💬

This works best when people come together—please share if you know others who might want to form a group locally. Even sharing this post could help form a group—thank you for spreading the word.

For many refugee families, arriving in the UK is just the beginning. With no home, no job, no support network starting again from scratch can feel impossible.

But with the right support, refugees don’t just survive, they thrive.

At Refugee Council, we walk alongside families from day one. From navigating housing and schools, to finding work and building friendships, we help people feel part of their communities.

Together, we can create a future where refugee families don’t just get by, they belong, contribute, and flourish.

Did you know the number of families and adults we were able to support last year?

Not only that, but our support is often felt in a number of different ways:

💛 Helping those facing homelessness with emergency support, a warm meal and a safe place
💛 Access to housing, benefits and healthcare
💛 Tackle the feeling of isolation by helping those learn the languages
💛 Connecting people with the education, training and job opportunities they are after
💛 Making sure we support children and young people to feel safe in new communities

But of course, none of this great work is possible without your support.

🙏 Thank you for everything you’ve helped us achieve

This International Children’s Day, think of the children we work with.

Children forced to leave behind their homes, friends and everything they have ever known.

Children carrying the trauma of war, violence and loss.

Children arriving in the UK alone, without parents or anyone to care for them.

But for more than 30 years, with the support of people like you, we have helped children and young people arriving in the UK alone after fleeing war, violence and persecution.

We help them feel safe again by protecting them from harm, providing emotional and practical support and helping them settle into school.

If you can then please consider donating today so we can continue being there for children as they go through one of the most difficult times of their life.

Lots of us are scared of talking about asylum and refugees.

We worry that we’ll say the wrong thing.
That we aren’t knowledgeable enough.
Or that we’ll end up in an argument.

But you don’t need to be an expert to talk about refugees. Having a good conversation is about knowing how to disagree respectfully.

Saeed, Walaa and their three children are from Syria, where they escaped civil war.

We were there to support them from moment they arrived in the UK.

Escaping and arriving in Hull via Jordan, when they landed at Manchester airport, Amer, an Employment Adviser at the Refugee Council was there to meet them. He saw their happiness to be arriving at a place of safety but also recognised their fear of the unknown.

Not knowing how the rental or job markets work and not speaking the language fluently can make it very hard to rebuild your life in a new country. Amer knew how that felt, arriving in a new place with skills, knowledge and a desire to work.

“I am not exaggerating, it is really rewarding, it is like I am welcoming a family. I was an asylum seeker myself; I want to help them. I want to see that happiness in their eyes. I also see their fear and feel them.”

We want refugees to find meaningful work. When people can contribute, they feel joy and have purpose.

For people fleeing war, violence and persecution finding safety is the first step in starting a new life in a new country.

From the moment people arrive in the UK we are there. Providing long-lasting support for refugee families to gain access to accommodation, learn English, find work and become independent, contributing to the communities that welcomed them is what we're all about.

Born in the aftermath of World War II, we know what it takes to help refugees rebuild their lives in Britain and thrive.

We know rebuilding takes time, and the right support.

Become part of that journey by donating to support our work: https://www.refugeecouncil.org.uk/support-us/ways-to-donate/donate-today-to-help-a-refugee-into-employment/

What does it take to thrive in a new country: not just survive.

Amer knows the answer, because he’s lived it. Once seeking asylum himself, he now works to welcome refugee families as they arrive in the UK and begin rebuilding their lives.

From meeting families at the airport to helping them navigate housing, jobs, and language barriers, Amer walks alongside them every step of the way.

This is what real support looks like.

“You have to understand what they’ve been through. You have to listen before you offer what you can do.”
