Congratulations to our long-term partner, the Sudanese Journalists Syndicate, on being awarded the UNESCO/Guillermo Cano World Press Freedom Prize 2026.

This recognition honours the courage of Sudanese journalists who continue to defend truth and press freedom in extremely difficult and dangerous conditions.

At a time when Sudanโ€™s conflict has made independent reporting more vital than ever, their work is a powerful reminder of why journalism matters.

What can fragile contexts teach us about responding to information manipulation?
Our new report draws on discussion from the latest Thomson Talks session at the Cambridge Disinformation Summit 2026 to examine that question through lessons from humanitarian crises and highly polarised environments. It highlights the importance of trusted local voices, resilient communication channels, stronger coordination and better ways to understand impact.

Thomson joins partners in Lusaka, Zambia, as media freedom and digital rights take centre stage around World Press Freedom Day.
The city will host the UNESCO Global Conference on 4โ€“5 May, alongside RightsCon, which runs from 5โ€“8 May.

On 5 May, Thomson will take part in the AGILE session โ€œThe Future of Media Developmentโ€ alongside consortium partners including Internews, ARTICLE 19, Free Press Unlimited, Fojo Media Institute and CFI.

The panel looks to where media development goes next. It will look at practical approaches that are already showing results and what they can teach us about designing programmes that deliver real impact.

Through the AGILE project, Thomson is supporting independent media to strengthen viability, innovation and resilience in challenging environments. We look forward to joining partners, practitioners, donors and media leaders in Lusaka to share lessons and discuss practical strategies for the future of public interest media.

At the International Journalism Festival in Perugia, Italy, Thomson convened a packed informal discussion on the structural barriers that continue to limit climate reporting.

Co-hosted with the Media Innovation Studio at the University of Lancashire and the University of Helsinki, the conversation examined the gap between the scale of the climate crisis and the way it is covered, and considered how journalism can respond with greater consistency, relevance and accountability.
The session is now helping shape the Perugia Declaration 2026 โ€” a pledge document calling for the climate crisis to be treated as a consistent editorial priority across the newsroom.
