🌍 FIT Europe Annual Meeting 2026 — FIT for the Future

We’re pleased to continue introducing the speakers who will join us for the FIT Europe Annual Meeting 2026, taking place on 20–21 November in Madrid, hosted by Asociación Española de Traductores, Correctores e Intérpretes (Asetrad).

We are delighted to welcome Sara Robertson, who will speak about Entrepreneurial Behaviours.

Sara trained as an architect at Edinburgh College of Art, specialising in historic building conservation. Before joining the Institute of Translation and Interpreting (ITI) in 2023, she spent 20 years working in a range of training, policy and leadership roles in the historic environment sector.

Her experience across different professional environments brings an interesting perspective to the skills, behaviours and approaches that can support professionals and organisations in navigating the future.

We are offering 2 x translation residencies for UK-based literary translators, to run from 1 February 2027 to 31 May 2027.

The residencies give the translators the opportunity to explore an area of literary translation and language that fascinates them, as well as the precious time to translate in a supportive environment.

🎥 A message from Dr Kate Thompson

As part of the launch of the second edition of Working with Interpreters in Mental Health, Dr Kate Thompson shares some thoughts on the importance of understanding the interpreter’s role in mental health settings.

Effective work with interpreters is a collaborative process. Briefing, preparation and open communication between clinicians and interpreters can make a real difference to the quality of communication and, ultimately, to the experience of the person using the service.

The new edition brings together perspectives from interpreters, clinicians and service users and explores a range of contexts, including working across language and culture, with BSL interpreters, with children and young people, with people who have experienced trauma, and in family therapy.

We’re pleased to share Kate’s short video and encourage colleagues across the interpreting and mental health professions to explore this valuable resource. 📚

🌍 International Translation Day 2026

Today, 30 September, we celebrate International Translation Day and the language professionals who help people, communities and nations communicate across linguistic and cultural boundaries.

Translation is much more than transferring words from one language to another. It requires linguistic expertise, cultural awareness, subject knowledge, precision and professional judgement.

The United Nations recognises the important role of translators, interpreters and terminologists in facilitating dialogue, understanding and cooperation, and in contributing to development and peace. International Translation Day was established by the UN General Assembly in 2017 through Resolution 71/288. https://www.un.org/en/observances/international-translation-day

For AIT, this day is an opportunity to recognise the professionalism, dedication and expertise of our colleagues across the language professions.
