Spinal Research

Spinal Research Spinal Research is the UK’s leading charity funding research into treatments for Spinal Cord Injury. Together we will cure paralysis.

Spinal Research, charity 1151015, was founded in 1980 to fund research into spinal cord injury and repair. Our aim is to restore sensation and mobility to people paralysed as a result of a spinal cord injury - our vision is a world where spinal cord injury does not mean a lifetime of paralysis. We fund our pioneering research through donations, as we receive no government funding. You can support us at www.spinal-research.org

Groundbreaking new research funded in part by Spinal Research has uncovered new hope for spinal cord repair 💙💚

Scientists at the University of Cambridge have successfully grown miniature brain and spinal cord circuits in the laboratory, allowing them to study how nerve fibres regenerate after injury.

The Cambridge research team leader Dr András Lakatos says:

“When the brain and spinal cord are damaged, the nerve fibres that carry movement signals from the brain to the spinal cord rarely grow back. That’s why paralysis is usually permanent. But we didn’t know exactly when the ability of axons to regenerate becomes limited. Our model provides a good indication that this block happens during development, and it can still be reversed after this point."

This discovery is a great example of how Spinal Research funds vital work towards curing paralysis. Visit our website to learn more.

Together, we will cure paralysis.

“The return of finger function remains my deepest long-term wish. Even partial recovery would transform my life. It would dramatically shift my independence and reduce the level of assistance I rely on every day."

At Spinal Research, our goal is a future where paralysis can be cured.

Advances in research will mean that people like Djordje will be able to access treatment to regain function, comfort, and dignity. Visit our website to read Djordje's story, and hear his hopes for the future of research.

In case you missed it, we were at the recent American Spinal Injury Association (ASIA) conference. Read on to hear how Shajia from our team found it!

"Representing Spinal Research at the annual ASIA Scientific Meeting was a brilliant opportunity to hear leading researchers share their latest findings in spinal cord injury (SCI) research.

"Key course themes included the importance of SCI biobanking and the need for international coordination to strengthen biobank infrastructure, the potential of smart trials and innovative trial designs to address the limitations of traditional clinical trials in SCI, and the evolving use of neuromodulation to restore function after injury.

"Scientific meetings like ASIA play an important role in advancing knowledge by fostering collaboration, encouraging critical discussion, and supporting innovation and discovery. In the field of spinal cord injury, these meetings are particularly important for sharing emerging evidence, developing best practice, and accelerating the translation of new approaches into meaningful improvements for the SCI community."
