13–14th of June 1982 — Battle of Mount Tumbledown

In the final hours of the Falklands War, British forces fought one of the most hard-fought and determined night battles of the entire campaign — the assault on Mount Tumbledown, the key high ground overlooking Port Stanley. The attack was led by the 2nd Battalion, Scots Guards advancing under cover of darkness against heavily fortified positions held by the Argentine 5th Marine Infantry Battalion (BIM 5)

What followed was intense close-quarter fighting across steep slopes, rock outcrops, and trench systems in freezing conditions. The Scots Guards pressed forward step by step through the night, facing determined resistance and difficult terrain, but never losing momentum. Supporting fire came from British artillery, Royal Engineers, naval gunfire from the Royal Navy, and air support from the RAF — a coordinated effort that helped break the final defensive line around Port Stanley.

By dawn on the 14th of June, Mount Tumbledown had been taken — opening the way for the end of the campaign and the surrender of Argentine forces shortly after. It was a battle defined by courage, endurance, and determination in the harshest conditions — and one of the final major actions that secured victory in the South Atlantic. We remember all who fought, and all who never returned home.

Lest we forget.
