Our Family Support Worker ran a short one-to-one session today focused on building small connections that help babies and parents play, communicate, and grow together.

We talked about the importance of tummy time and how singing action songs can help keep babies calm and engaged during it. We agreed that tummy time or supported sitting should be done in short bursts, as it can be tiring for babies.

We also explored tuning into a baby’s early non-verbal, such as using eye gaze to show a preference for one toy over another. We practiced echoing the sounds babies make to encourage the beginnings of verbal communication and conversation—when a baby makes a sound, the parent responds with a similar one, keeping the baby interested and boosting their confidence to try again. A great first session, with more to come!

This week, several of our parents have taken part in work experience with our Corporate Sponsors, Greiner Bio-One UK. For many of our clients, this has been their first real opportunity to explore a wide range of roles all in one place, and to imagine themselves in a working environment they may never have pictured before.
Work experience is valuable for obvious reasons, but for our families it represents something even bigger: a step into the unknown. In the past, this has often been a source of anxiety. Having the support of our Family Support Worker, Claire, to accompany them and be present on site has given them the confidence to take that giant step forward.
Many of our clients worry they aren’t “qualified” for employment due to missed education or years spent as the main caregiver at home. Opportunities like this help them recognise the transferable skills they already have — skills that many employers value. Life experience can be just as powerful as formal qualifications.
We are grateful to Greiner Bio-One UK and their team for their patience, encouragement, and willingness to gently guide our clients out of their comfort zones. Even a few days in a new environment can open the door to a different future.

On 22nd August, our team will be taking on the Malvern Hill Challenge — a 10‑mile trek across the stunning Malvern Hills, guided by the brilliant team at Your Advantage Challenge. We’re doing it to raise much‑needed funds for The Family Haven, and we’d love your support.

Right now, 5.2 million children in the UK are living in poverty. Many families are also facing challenges such as poor mental health, domestic violence, unsuitable housing, and isolation. We know we can’t help every family — but together, we can make a real difference for some of the most vulnerable children in our own community.

If you’re able to help, please consider making a donation or sharing this post. Every pound and every share helps us reach more people who care.
